Interaction Tracking Overview

  • Here is a sample interaction report
  • An interaction is any event such as a click, mouse-over or video-play, that does NOT result in a user clicking-through to a website.
  • Interaction tracking is optional and free.
  • Interaction tracking is not automatically included in gadget ads. Clients need to add the code for each type of interaction that they would like tracked and reported.
  • Implementation details are in the interaction tracking section of the Tutorial.
  • Please work with your sales team to determine which interactions to build into your gadget ad.
  • Detailed reporting of interactions are available in the Reports Center. Please contact your sales team to generate the interaction tracking reports after your campaign launches.

How to Read Interaction Tracking Reports:

To understand the differences in the metrics, let's say a gadget ad with a video was shown to users 4 times, and the interaction that the client chooses to track is when users play the video.

  • On the first impression the video was played twice.
  • On the second impression the video was played once.
  • On the third impression the video was NOT played.
  • On the fourth impressions the video was NOT played.
Metric Description Calculation Example
Interaction Enabled Impressions The number of impressions that have one or more interactions enabled.

If the report generated is only for gadget ads containing interaction tracking then this value will be the same as the "impressions" column (not shown).

However, if gadget ads without interaction tracking, or non-gadget ads, are included in the reports then this value will be less than the "impressions" column.
N/A 4
Interacted Impressions The number of impressions that had at least one interaction of any type. N/A 2
Interacted Impression Rate The percentage of impressions that had at least one interaction of any type. Interacted Impressions / Interaction Enabled Impressions * 100% 2/4 *100% = 50%
Total Interactions The total number of interactions. N/A 3
Interaction Rate Percentage of interactions for all impressions. Total Interactions / Interaction Enabled Impressions * 100% 3/4 * 100% = 75%
Average Interactions per impression Average number of interactions for any impressions that had at least one interaction. Total Interactions / Interacted Impressions 3/2 = 1.5
Interaction Value This is an optional column.  If a client assigns a value to each interaction, this is the total value for all interactions. Total Interactions * value of each interaction (assuming each interaction is worth $10)
3 * 10 = 30.0

Generate the Interaction Tracking Reports

There are two types of interaction tracking reports.

A) Single-Interaction Reports:

  • Advantage: This type of report provides metrics based on "report type" (placement, keyword etc)
  • Disadvantage: It reports all interaction types as the same.
  • Note: If you only have one interact type, this is the only report you'll need.

1. Within your account in the AWFE, click on the "Reports" tab.
2. Click on "Create a New Report »"
3. Under "1. Report Type", select from Placement/Keyword Performance, Ad Performance, URL Performance, Ad Group Performance, Campaign Performance, or Account Performance
4. Under "2. Settings", for some reports, if the "Ad Variations" section is available, you'll need to select Gadget Ad.
5. Under "3. Advanced settings" expand the "Add or Remove Columns" section
6. Select all the desired columns under "Interaction Columns"
7. Click "Create Report"

B) Full-Interaction Reports:

  • Advantage: This type of report provides metrics for each interaction type.
  • Disadvantage: It does not break the interaction type down by placement or keyword.
  • Note: "Interaction Enabled Impressions" and "Interacted Impressions" is the same for all interaction types since each impression contains all interaction types.
1. Within your account in the AWFE, click on the "Reports" tab.
2. Click on "Create a New Report »"
3. Under "1. Report Type", select Interaction Performance
4. Under "3. Advanced settings" expand the "Add or Remove Columns" section
5. Select how detail the report should be under "Levels of Detail"
6. Select all the desired columns under "Interaction Columns"
7. Click "Create Report"
