UPDATE: Carr Fire now burning 145,015 acres; Igo and French Gulch flareups controlled

The Carr Fire, fueled by wind gusts on Saturday, flared up in French Gulch and Igo and grew by about 3,000 acres.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said law enforcement went around French Gulch and urged people, who defied the original evacuation orders, to leave right away because "fire activity is picking up." 

A Cal Fire public information officer said that "with the increasing winds, the fire activity is picking up" near an "island" in French Gulch that had been considered a safe spot. 

The flareups, which broke out about 2:30 p.m., were brought under control by crews working on the fire lines. The fire is burning more than 226 square miles or 145,015 acres. Containment remains at 41 percent, Cal Fire said Saturday night.

“It did not end up affecting the town of Igo,” said Blanca Mercado, Cal Fire spokeswoman.

While technically there aren't any new evacuations over the flareup, Cal Fire said officials were going around warning those who never left that they should. 

Meanwhile, the official said "nothing is going to affect Igo right now," though the CHP reported that the fire had jumped a ridge there.

Another Cal Fire official said the fire did indeed jump a ridge, but it wasn't threatening more homes in Igo. 

A red flag warning was in effect until 11 p.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service issues those when there are critical fire weather conditions.

Authorities said they'll work through the night to mitigate potential spot fires across control lines.

The Carr Fire was burning 141,825 acres as of Saturday morning, with 41 percent containment. That is 221.6 square miles of charred land.

At last count, it had destroyed 1,073 homes, 14 commercial buildings and 492 outbuildings. It remains the sixth-most destructive fire in California history and continues to threaten 1,358 structures.

A Local Assistance Center is available until Wednesday at Shasta High School for people who have been affected by the fire. Its hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

PG&E crews in the area of Iron Mountain and Keswick Dam roads were told to evacuate this afternoon, the CHP reported. 

The fire has unexpectedly taken a turn for the worse this afternoon, spurring new evacuations in French Gulch and jumping a ridge in the Igo area, the CHP said. 

Until now, electrical workers have been in evacuated areas to repair power lines and other infrastructure damaged in the fire.

Fire crews are being challenged by wind gusts.

Dispatch reported around 3:25 p.m. there were reports of spot fires on Quartz Hill Road and River Ridge Drive and smoke was seen coming from a home in the 17000 block of Keswick Road.

The fire has jumped a ridge line in this afternoon on the north side of Placer Road in the Igo area, according to the CHP.

The CHP didn't immediately say whether new evacuations in that area would be coming.

There is difficulty getting people out of their homes on Trinity Mountain Road, and authorities report that they're having difficulty getting helicopters in due to the smoke.

A hard closure has been issued on Highway 299, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page.

Rush Creek Road in Lewiston is also being closed, according to the CHP page.

Authorities are calling on new evacuations in French Gulch after the Carr Fire turned around and began to burn actively on a ridge.

That's according to firefighter communications on radio scanner traffic.

"The community itself of French Gulch is being impacted right now," someone is heard saying in the scanner radio.

Firefighters said some people did not evacuate and are still in the area.

Crews are trying to get aircraft in that area to drop water on the fire.

Carr Fire: What we know as of Saturday

The Carr Fire has grown to 141,825 acres as of Saturday morning, and is at 41 percent containment.

The fire has destroyed 1,073 homes and more than 1,300 structures are still under threat.

According to officials with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, firefighters worked through the night to subdue spot fires that passed control lines. But winds, low humidity and an "unstable atmosphere have increased fire activity," officials said.

According to the National Weather Service, the Redding area is under a Red Flag Warning until 11 p.m. Saturday due to ridgetop gusty winds, which may reach 25 to 35 miles per hour, and low humidity.

The Carr Fire started July 23 and was sparked by the mechanical failure of a vehicle.

The fire jumped the Sacramento River and went into west Redding on July 26, creating its own weather system, killing six people.

Many people remain evacuated from their homes and certain roads remain closed.

Gov. Jerry Brown will visit Shasta County today o assess the damage left behind by the fire.

A Local Assistance Center is available till Aug. 8 at Shasta High School from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
