Staghorn sumac gets its name from its thick, velvety upper branches, which resemble the antlers of young male deer. Short-tongued bees, flies, and wasps visit the flowers for pollen, while carpenter bees occasionally burrow into the stems. Caterpillars of many moths and butterflies eat the foliage.
