NEPALGUNJ, May 20: The social campaigners, rights workers and civil society leaders have taken strong exception to the indefinite banda or shutdown enforced by different ethnic organizations and political parties, resulting in disruption of daily life and services.
Speaking in an interaction on role of citizens in the present context organized by the local peace committee, the Informal Sector Services Centre (INSEC) and HimRights here on Saturday, they criticized this mode of protest and said that organizing banda and general strikes thereby, effectively disrupting public life, was an undemocratic and irresponsible action.
They said that although it was right for the people to call for their rights, it was not a democratic practice to infringe on the rights of others.

KATHMANDU, May 20: Normal life has been crippled all across the country including in the capital on the first day of the three-day banda called by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) on Sunday.
Academic institutions, market places and shops have remained closed and transport services have come to a complete halt due to the strike. The Broader Madhesi Front has also extended its support to today’s banda.
The general strike has been called demanding scrapping of the 11-state model that does not have names and clear delineation, federalism based on identity and guarantee of rights of indigenous people in the new constitution.

KATHMANDU, May 17: Agitating Bramhins, Chhetris, Thakuris and Dashnamis have called off their indefinite general strike Thursday evening following a three-point deal with the government.
According to Om Sharma, General Secretary of Brahmin Society, the agreement was reached in the presence of the top leaders of major political parties, including the UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, during a talk held at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction in Singha Durbar.

KATHMANDU, May 17: The government has mobilized Rs 190.08 billion in revenue over the first ten months of 2011/12, posting a growth of 19.6 percent over revenue mobilized in the same period last year.
As the revenue growth targeted for the fiscal year is 20 percent, the collection is short of the target. “But we are optimistic about attaining the annual target, which is about Rs 242 billion, as the rate of collections that had slid through mid-January till mid-March has gone up yet again,” said Finance Secretary Krishna Hari Baskota.
