Plot Synopsis

Setting Up
Following the events of "Batman - The Dark Knight" (Movie), Bruce Wayne has
concluded that his attempts to bring about justice in Gotham city are not going
to happen through his actions alone.  He tells Alfred that The Joker has won if
only by convincing the city that Batman is the real criminal, a catalyst for the
crimes committed against Gotham.  Batman avoids contact with the police,
delivering criminals in standard fashion, and rarely reaching out to newly appointed
Commissioner Gordon to prevent a conflict of interest from arising and causing
further schisms within the city.

Meanwhile in an urban/residential slum, sounds echo through a family home as
George Grayson Jr. drunkenly stumbles through his home after a day of work.  His
wife Alice tries to corral him but in his raging stupor, he slaps her, grabs her and
throws her to the ground barking that she is not to touch him.  In a bedroom, George's
two sons Dick and Nathaniel hear the ordeal.  Dick is only seven years old and lies in
bed crying, while Nathaniel, 14 packs his clothing and prepares to run away.  He
trips on a toy, alerting his younger brother who asks where he is going.

Nathaniel announces his intentions to run and get away from the hyper abusive father.
This only upsets his younger brother even further, who pleads with him not to leave.
Nathaniel pulls his shirt over his back and shows Dick scars and bruises from an
altercation with his father the night before as a reminder of what they both must endure.
Nathaniel tells Dick not to stay around for the same thing to happen to him before climbing
out of the bedroom window and disappearing from his younger brother's life.

Dick Growing Up
In the years following Nathaniel's flight from the home, Dick and his father get into
a multitude of confrontations; many of these a result from George's drinking problem
and Dick's protective nature of his mother who is now pregnant.  Because of the issues
at home, Dick has become more and more aggressive and has gotten into numerous fights at
school; often with boys who are treating their girlfriends in manners that remind Dick of
his troubled life at home.  He is eventually expelled from school and ordered to attend
a corrective counseling academy for the most troublesome of students only to have his
aggressive tendencies augmented by bad influence students, presumably from equally disjointed
family environments.

Dick returns home from school one day to find his mother on the floor crying and battered.
His father, who had just been laid off from work had come home early, already drunk and
abused his mother to the point of near unconsciousness.  Dick was unable to control his rage
and confronted his father.  A disastrous fist fight erupted, resulting in George towering over
dick with a .357 Magnum Revolver threatening to end his life immediately.  Dick's mother,
terrified for the life of the one son she has left at home musters the energy to pull George
away just as he is preparing to discharge his weapon, missing Dick by mere inches.  Dick
rises to wrestle the gun away from his father, and succeeds.  George breaks free of his wife's
grip, grabs her by the hair and slams her face into the counter.  Alice Grayson survives the
impact, sending her into a coma.  As George turns around to focus his attention back to Dick, he
finds his son on the ground, pointing the gun straight at him.  George barely makes a step toward
Dick before a round is fired off, ultimately killing him.

Assuming his mother is dead, and hearing sirens in the distance, Dick grabs what he can of clothing
and canned food and hurriedly departs the Grayson residence.

On the Streets
Dick is now a wanted murderer, accused of the murder of his father, and attempted murder of
his mother.  In the days following the incident, he meets a group of homeless teens who have been
squatting in various abandoned buildings and surviving by breaking into homes, stealing various
jewelries, food items and selling what they can to pawn shops.  The group navigates Gotham city
quite quickly by performing various acrobatic maneuvers known as 'parkour' to move from one point
to another in fluid motions, to elude police capture.  Dick is slow to learn, but his determination
earns him the respect of everyone in the group before eventually becoming the best of the group.

On numerous occasions Dick has to fight off random street thugs and gangs who accuse his group of
treading on their turf, even though they are merely trying to survive.  When Dick is cornered by
a particularly ferocious trio of thugs, he nearly gives up hope on his life when a number of shots
ring out and the thugs fall down dead.  A silhouette is seen walking towards him, Dick yells out
quite cynically "You missed one, dead shot".  It's not until the person gets close enough for him to
recognize him that dick sees who the shooter was and barely has enough breath to say one word:

"Nathaniel..."
