This invention relates to devices by which furnace wall blocks or tile are kept in firm contact with water wall tubes so as to maintain a good contact for the best heat conducting between the tile and tubes and yet provide attachment in such a manner that broken or injured ones can be removed and replaced by new ones. The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings, which show several illustrative embodiments of the invention. In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side view of two of the water tubes with tile attached; Fig. 2 is a section through thesame; and Fig. 3 is an end view showing one of the details.
This invention is especially useful in connection with furnace walls for boilers that are made up of water tubes that are connected to the circulation system of the boiler and tile of refractory material that closes the spaces between the tubes, thus making a substantially air tight wall. Reference character 1 indicates tubes against which the tile are to be placed, so as to close the space between the tubes. In Figs. 1 to 3, the tile 2 are provided with faces on the furnace side of the wall that are parallel to the plane of the tubes, and with rounded portions that fit against the tubes with a considerable area of contact. A narrow portion,3 of each tile 2 extends through the space between the tubes 1 beyond the center line of the tubes, and the projecting portions 3 are provided with recessesd along thesides thereof, next to the tubes, and transverse openings 5 are provided near the ends of the recesses, which openings 5 on opposite sides of the projecting portion 3 extend toward each other. Bolts 6 are placed in the recesses 4 and have projecting lugs 7 near the ends thereof that can be turned into the o nings 5 simply by turning the bolts 6 anally. The bolts 6 are provided with threaded ends 8 that project through holes in cross pieces 9 that rest against the tubes, and the nuts 10 on the bolts 6 enable the bolts to draw the tile 2 into firm contact with the tubes when the lugs-7 extend into the recesses 5. The tile 2 may be removed simply by loosening the nuts .and. turning the cesses 5. The edges of the tile that contact with each other are beveled near the side away from the furnace side of the tile, as indicated at 11, and heat resisting packing material 12, such as asbestos, for example, is put in place to make the joints air tight. This feature can be used in connection with all of the modifications of the invention, and the description will not be repeated in connection with the others.
Changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. It is to be understood also that where the word tile is used in the specification and claims it is meant to include blocks as well, that may be made entirely of metal. or composite blocks made of metal and refractory material.
We claim:
1. In a furnace wall, water tubes, tile having a portion between said tubes extending beyond the center line thereof and means ineluding bolts with lugs thereon connected to said tubes and contacting with said extending portion to keep said tile in place. said bolts being removable from said tile by turning the same less than 180.
2. In a furnace wall, water tubes, tile having a portion between said tubes extending beyond the center line thereof, recesses in the sides of said. extending portion, and connections including bolts with lugs thereon between said recesses and tubes for keeping said tile in place, said bolts being rotatable to permit removal of said lugs from said recesses.
3. In a furnace wall, water tubes, tile having a portion between saidtubes extending beyond the center line thereof. recesses in the sides of said extending portion, and bolts with lugs thereon between said recesses and tubes for keeping said tile in place, said bolts being rotatable to permit removal of said lugs from said recesses.
4. In a furnace wall. water tubes, tile having a portion between said tubes extending bevond the center line thereof. recesses in the sides of said extending portion, and hooks between said recesses and tubes for keeping said tile in place, said hooks bearing against surfaces of said recesses and being rotatable to remove said hooks from said recesses.
5. In a furnace wall, water tubes, tile having a portion between said tubesextending beyond the center line thereof, recesses in the sides of said extending portion, and holding members comprising bolts having lugs for said tile projecting into said recesses and contacting with sides of said recesses, said bolts being rotatable to per nit removal of said lugs from said recesses. 6. In a furnace wall, watertubes, tile having a portion extending between said tubes, recesses in the sides of said portion lying substantially parallel to the axes of said tubes, and metallic holding members bearing against said tubes and extending into said recesses.
