NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN head beach volleyball coach
Noelle Rooke has announced the 2019 Matador beach volleyball schedule as the Matadors open their sixth season of the sport on Feb. 22nd.
After setting a program record last season for most wins in one season with 17, the Matadors are set to equal the program record with 29 matches in 2019. CSUN also played 29 beach matches last season, finishing 17-8. The Matadors will open the 2019 season with four exhibition matches before their regular season opener Feb. 28 against Loyola Marymount at the Matador Beach Volleyball Complex.
"I would compare this schedule to our schedule last year with the emphasis again on playing a lot of matches on our home courts at our new location in front of our fans," said Rooke. "We are an incredibly young team with only one senior and six freshmen so I think our schedule is fairly balanced with the level of competition we will face."
The Matador Beach Volleyball Complex, relocated in the fall from the east side of campus to the center of campus alongside Matador Hall, will host a mix of 15 Matador dual matches and tri-dual matches in 2019. The new facility will be expanded from the size of the current facility to accommodate CSUN recreational purposes and other events. The former beach volleyball facility had three competition courts, the new facility will also have the same three competition courts but will have additional space for a potential layout of up to five recreational courts.
In addition the new complex will be in a favorable location in regards to wind conditions which are ever present in the San Fernando Valley during the spring months.
For the fourth straight year, the Matadors will open the season with four exhibition matches as part of the JC/Ramon Calderon Cup. CSUN will take on Long Beach City College, Ventura College, El Camino College and Moorpark College at the Matador Beach Volleyball Complex over two days. The regular season gets underway Feb. 28 as CSUN hosts a tri-dual with Loyola Marymount and Vanguard University.
March gets underway with a quad-dual between the Matadors, Pepperdine, CSU Bakersfield and Long Beach State at Zuma Beach in Malibu on Mar. 2. CSUN returns home to host Cal State Los Angeles on Mar. 5 before traveling to Santa Cruz for the second annual Big West/West Coast Conference Challenge. After finishing a perfect 3-0 at the inaugural tournament last year, the Matadors take on Santa Clara (Mar. 8), San Francisco (Mar. 9) and Pacific (Mar. 9) this season. CSUN then returns to the valley to host a tri-dual against Missouri State and Vanguard on Mar. 13.
A tri-dual in Bakersfield against the host Roadrunners and Marymount University follows on Mar. 16 before the Matadors host Loyola Marymount and Colorado Mesa in another tri-dual on Mar. 23. CSUN then wraps up March by heading up the coast for the second annual Big West Challenge (Mar. 29-31) at Pismo Beach. The Matadors will play, in succession, CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Hawai'i, UC Davis, Long Beach State and Sacramento State over three days.
The final homestand of the season features a tri-dual against Cal State LA and Marymount University on Apr. 11 and a tri-dual against CSU Bakersfield and Concordia-Irvine on Apr. 12 to close the regular season.
The conference championship tournament, in its fourth season, will take place April 26-28. The 2018 Big West Tournament was held in Honolulu, Hawai'i after the first two Big West Tournaments were held in Huntington Beach (2016) and Pismo Beach (2017).
