Efforts by Koopman, Martin not enough for Hounds in final home match of season

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy volleyball team (16-9, 9-4 GLVC) grabbed the first set on Tuesday night against the visiting Missouri-St. Louis Tritons (12-13, 5-9 GLVC), but failed to overcome late droughts before succumbing in four sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Leading 15-13, the Greyhounds scored four straight points to pull away from Tritons with kills by Julia Kruzan and Taylor Jacquay. Missouri-St. Louis fought back to tie it at 24, but Jacquay ended the battle with a pair of kills for UIndy to win the first set.

It was tight the final three sets, but late runs by the Tritons saw them lead 24-19 each time. In the second frame, the Hounds rallied for five straight, including two kills from Lauren Koopman. Missouri-St. Louis snagged the final two points of the set before taking a 2-1 lead after a third-game victory.

After leading 7-4, the Hounds surrendered six of the next seven points to put the Tritons in control. UIndy could not capitalize on the attack late in the set, scoring just two points off Missouri-St. Louis service errors before the scoreboard read 24-19 once again. This time, a kill by Kruzan and service ace by Katie Furlong was all the Greyhounds could muster before dropping the final frame.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Koopman registered a team-best 15 kills on .481 hitting in the loss, the senior's highest total as a Greyhound. After attacking at a .667 rate with nine kills last Saturday, Koopman is now hitting .538 over the past seven sets of action with 24 kills.

Olivia Martin etched her name in the record book once again on Tuesday night, scooping up 22 digs to give her 519 in her sophomore campaign. The Fort Wayne native now ranks third in program history in digs by a second-year player. As a freshman, Martin recorded 522 digs to come four shy of the rookie record by Ashley Fallos. The sophomore is now just 16 digs away from being among the program's top-15 career leaders in the category.

Katie Voelz finished with a solid stat line in the loss, totaling nine kills on .316 hitting. The senior recorded two service aces on the night, while also stopping four attacks, including one solo block.

Alyssa Spears dished out another 49 assists against the Tritons, while recording 21 digs, a new career high. Her previous best was 20 earlier this season at Coker.

Katie Furlong recorded 13 kills, the seventh straight match the sophomore has reached double figures. The Galena, Ill. native has now passed double digits in 24 of 25 matches this season.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will conclude the regular season with five consecutive road bouts, beginning this Friday night at McKendree in Lebanon, Ill.
