Under Deck Find: 1987 Chevy Camaro IROC Z28

Barn finds of more modern vehicles don’t pop up all that often, but I think this under the deck find of a 1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28 counts. It’s definitely been there for a while, clearly forgotten about along with a boat that hasn’t seen the water in quite some time. The listing notes that it’s a desirable color combo of white over red and that it’s made rarer for having a solid panel roof with no T-tops. The car doesn’t appear to have any rust or body damage despite clearly being in need of a cleaning, and the seller says he is firm on his asking price of $2,500. It’s listed for sale here on Facebook Marketplace in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Camaro has seen better days, for sure, with a thick coating of dust and plenty of other filth all over the exterior. It looks like some paint work has been attempted on the hood at one point, with spots of primer in several places. I can’t quite tell what the pink spray paint / crayon marks on the windshield are supposed to indicate, but the overall appearance is that of a car that’s been neglected. Despite the gauge cluster having been previously replaced, the seller contends the mileage shown of 80,000 is accurate due to the Camaro spending the last ten years either parked or being towed place to place. There’s a story there for sure, as carting a non-running project around for ten years takes a level of commitment and patience not many folks have.

The engine is the desirable 5.7L V8 with Tuned Port Injection pushing out a healthy 225 b.h.p., and you’ll notice a “Hypertech” badge at the bottom/center of the picture, which is a popular brand of cold air intakes. It wouldn’t surprise me if this Camaro has been modified to some degree, as it certainly doesn’t give off the vibe of having been treated like a time capsule survivor. There’s also a solid coating of desert dust on top of the engine, which isn’t surprising given it’s been parked outdoors in Arizona for a decade. The listing doesn’t mention much about the mechanical integrity of the Camaro, but one can assume it will need a total reconditioning once it leaves its abode from beneath the deck.

The red interior is definitely a plus, and the dash doesn’t appear to be cracked. The original headunit assembly is long gone and the ugly seat covers don’t inspire confidence about the quality of decision making by previous owners. The seller contends that you can buy this example and make triple your money back at auction once it’s restored, but I’m not sure this generation of Camaro yet promises those kinds of returns. Certainly, this example has a lot going for it in terms of how it was originally optioned, but it’s going to take way more than a weekend or two of reconditioning work to realize a payoff. But if you aren’t concerned with flipping it at auction, there’s a lot to like here in terms of a foundation.

    if this was closeby and didn’t reek of mildew or rodent urine upon inspection i would happily pop for a couple thousand bucks to restore or restomod the crap out of it.

    What are the chances of that? I can smell the pee from here. Too bad, this was once a nice car. Really nice without the leaky T-Bar that also makes the body flex too much.

    This kind of car really appeals to me. Rode hard and put up wet but it’s a nice shape and nice detailing with the rims and styling cues. If I didn’t think I’d get Covid19 from sitting in it I’d take it as a daily driver, as is. A few patches of primer here and there are just beauty marks on an old Camaro.

    A few years from now millennials will be gobbling these up to relive their high school days.

    Even if this car reeks of mildew and mice piss, fixing that is a whole lot easier than cutting out rust! I agree on the no t-top setup. No rattling and wind noise!

      Never had much luck getting that smell out of a car, what is your secret?

        I replaced the carpet, seats, door panels, and removed dash to clean out the crap in the HVAC. Time consuming but still cheaper than replacing sheet metal.

    These cars are more appealing to me now, then when they freely roaming our streets.
    It’s most likely due to the fact that when I see them now, they are missing their most popular option;

    Did anyone else get a kick out of looking down at the instrument cluster while cruising between stoplights? The “single double “ needles looked like something engineered for the starship enterprise! 😁 Que “Livin on a Prayer” …What a fun time it was to be a teenager.

    Missing left front intake runner tubes. I had a set cause my dealer dented mine when I had it in for injector problems.

    Wow, what an opportunity to own an IROC in “very good condition” (according to the seller) for only $2,500!
