No Reserve: 1964 Studebaker Avanti R2 4-Speed

This 1964 Studebaker Avanti is one of 1,833 R2 examples produced for the 1963 and 1964 model years and is among just 809 Avantis sold for the 1964 model year. The car was delivered new to the Van Winkle Motor Co. in Dallas, Texas, as an “introductory show car” and was purchased by the current owner in 1982. The car has been refinished in silver over front bucket seats with gray-and-black Ferrari Daytona-style upholstery, and the Paxton-supercharged 289ci V8 is linked with a replacement four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes power-assisted front disc brakes, 15″ steel wheels with spoke-style covers, power steering, power front windows, a rear speaker, an aftermarket AM/FM/cassette stereo, and VintageAir air conditioning. This Avanti R2 is now offered on dealer consignment at no reserve with a copy of its order sheet, the owner’s manual, service records, spare parts, and a clean Texas title.

Originally red, the Raymond Loewy-designed fiberglass body was refinished in silver as part of a refurbishment between 2008 and 2012. Clearcoat checking is noted by the selling dealer, and other imperfections can be viewed in the gallery. Exterior details include polished trim, dual exhaust outlets, Avanti badging, and wraparound chrome bumpers with rubber guards.

The 15″ steel wheels feature spoke-style covers and are mounted with Nexen N’Priz AH5 whitewall tires measuring 215/75. Stopping is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. Power steering was optioned from the factory.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench that have been reupholstered in gray leather with black Ferrari Daytona-style inserts. Aircraft-throttle-inspired climate controls on the center console are joined by overhead switchgear for lighting and fan control. Additional amenities include power front windows, a rear speaker, an aftermarket Mitsubishi AM/FM/cassette stereo, and VintageAir air conditioning. Wear is noted on the top of the driver’s seat bolster, and the removed radio is included in the sale.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline accompanied by a 160-mph speedometer, a clock, and readouts for coolant temperature, amperage, fuel level, oil pressure, and intake manifold pressure. The tachometer and fuel-level gauge do not work. The five-digit odometer shows 40 miles, and approximately 1k miles were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
