Vehicle Description
1987 Chevrolet IROC Z28
A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race
of Champions our IROC would pit all star drivers from numerous
venues of racing, against each other in similarly prepared cars.
Excepting the first season, those cars were provided by Chevrolet,
and they chose to feature the Camaro.
This IROC version of the 1987 Camaro is in full IROC street garb.
Special Painted badging, a low slung windshield, some fairings, a
"T" top in removable smoked glass, and a powerful 5.0 Liter tuned
port fuel injection engine were just a few of the features that
were added to this version of the Camaro only a 2 owner car with
84,737 consigner documented original miles.
Exterior
White paint covers the straight steel body panels, fairings and
front built in spoiler of the car. A curved glass rear deck with
lovers to help keep out some of the sun is seen on back. IROC Z in
Silver fade is seen on each door, as well as Z28 tuned port
injection in silver badge on the front lower fender. Hood louvers
and a removable smoked glass "T" top are optioned on this car.
Silver polished 5 spoked Camaro Mags are attached to all 4 corners
and noted as "front" and "rear" wheels because of different
offsets. Underside of car is very clean, and presents as a nicely
cared for 84,737 mile car
Interior
A snazzy deep red broadcloth bowls you over in bucket seat
configuration shows angled tuck and roll stitching in the middle
panels on seat and back. Bolsters are smooth and all bordered with
red piping. This also holds true for the rear 2 plus 2 seats which
individually fold down for rear compartment access. A black console
and dash, house all the critical instrumentation, as well as
climate controls, radio and automatic shift lever. Power windows
are installed. Power locks, power steering, power brakes, power
toggle mirrors and a power driver's seat are working and are great
conveniences with this sports car. The seats have two minor tears
in them but are otherwise pristine and very red, as is the carpet
flooding the floors all over.
Drivetrain
The Tuned Port Injection 5.0L gives plenty of smooth power. This is
topped with a TPI, and on back a 4-speed automatic transmission
with overdrive that has been optioned on. All this attached to a
limited slip rear axle. All is looking good under the hood!
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted on the suspension and driveshaft and
rear pumpkin. Floorpans are solid, as is unibody construction. Rear
disc brakes are on and front discs can be seen underneath.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooth idle until the warmup was afforded to
me. I slipped into the RED interior and was grabbed by the seats. A
shift into "D" and I was off like a prom dress, with great
acceleration, smooth automatic shifting, and good handling on the
test track. She's able to cruise at highway speeds easily, and air
was blowing cold due to it has been changed over to R-134. I had
the T top off for my test and it was a pleasant experience with
plenty of airflow from the outside and the cold A/C blowing.
Excepting the badging, this car is disguised as a mild mannered
everyday 1987 Chevrolet Camaro. A look under the hood, as well as
the IROC status option package #2, makes it anything but mild
mannered. All in very good condition, this car is a definite goer,
but can also be viewed at any car show you may want to drive it to.
Go ahead, get in and turn it over...well the engine, keep the
wheels down on the ground, although they have a tendency to spin
when you get goosey with your boot!
