Summary[edit]

Description

c/n 103-22444 Built in 1943 and delivered to the USAAF on 23rd October that year, she was shipped to the UK and arrived at Liverpool on 5th January 1944. She was then issued to the 357th Fighter Group at Leiston, Suffolk, where she was coded ‘G4-P’ and initially named “Swoose” before being renamed “Joan”. On 10th April 1944 “Joan” was hit by another Mustang on the ground and was sent away for repair as her tail was badly damaged. Once repaired she joined the 555th Fighter Training Squadron, part of the 496th Fighter Training Group based at Goxhill in Lincolnshire. On 7th June 1944 she was involved in a midair collision with Mustang 42-103036 and subsequently crashed 1 ½ miles South of Ownby, Lincolnshire. The pilot, 21 year old 2nd Lieutenant Charles ‘Butch’ Moritz, was killed instantly. What was not known when the crash site was excavated in 2011 was that his body had not been recovered at the time of the crash. Once this was realised the police were informed and his remains were later returned to the Unites States, where he was buried with full military honours. The wreckage of his P-51 is now on display at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, East Kirkby, Lincolnshire, UK
