Rash spreading? Heat rash/Allergy to sunflower lecithin?

*Waiting on a call back from the pediatrician*

I noticed a rash on my 8 week old son's chest yesterday morning that looked just like a heat rash. I figured it was due to the fact that he slept in a thicker swaddle than usual with a fuzzy sleeper on underneath. So last night we put him in his usual swaddle and a thin sleeper (like always). But today the rash looks worse, redder, and has spread. He seems totally normal, not fussy, no fever, breathing normally, etc.

He is EBF so the next option would be something in my diet is causing it. I went dairy free on Tuesday to help with his gas and green poops. I also started Sunflower Lecithin on Wednesday morning for clogs in my breasts. I took 1 pill Wednesday morning, 1 pill that night and 1 pill the following morning that he woke up with the rash. But can he even be allergic to that? Does Sunflower Lecithin go through the breast milk? I stopped taking it yesterday morning just to see what would happen and today the rash is worse. With my dairy free diet I have been eating dairy free icecream (So Delicious made with cashew milk and Ben & Jerry's made with almond milk). Could one of those be causing it? I've been eating the cashew milk based ice cream for a few days and the almond milk based one around the time the rash showed up.

So, we're looking at a possible heat rash, viral infection, allergy to sunflower lecithin, or a food in my diet. 🤷‍♀️🤨 Any ideas?

  • Nut allergy?
  • It could be anything, but there is a good chance if he has a problem with one thing in your diet he might have a problem with another. Nut is one of the top allergens so substituting with that doesn’t always work out. I know last baby I went dairy free with, I started eating more things I wouldn’t typically and she ended up being allergic to one of the things I had added into my diet.

Ugh, I just wanted to be able to still eat ice cream lol. I'm not sure if he even has an issue with dairy, but I figured with gas and green poops, it was worth a try.

    Possibly? I'm not sure. 😩
  • My daughter had the exact same thing for a few days. When I went to my two month appointment this week I showed the pediatrician. She told me to quit using that Aveeno baby lotion I was using and to use Vaseline a few times a day and it has gone away. She said it is just skin sensitivity that shows up around two months and basically it’s dry skin. You could also use Eucerin, CeraVe or Cetaphil....But she said Vaseline was most inexpensive and works just as well

Lol we already use unscented Eucerin soap & lotion. It's definitely not dry skin. This is a raised, bumpy rash.
  • Looks like heat rash to me. A food allergy rash is not usually localized. It will be on face arms legs back etc. I suffer from a lot of food allergies and had worries about my guy when his belly did this. Our pediatrician said it was heat rash, and agreed with me that if food related it would be in atleast 2 other spots. Heat rash can take days up to 2 weeks to go away and will only worsen once it starts if they overheat again at all. Try to stick with cotton clothes only and check the back of his neck through out the day to see how warm he is. I'd make an appointment with your pediatrician if it doesn't get smaller in a day or so though to see if you can use anything to help it heal faster.

Unscented is NOT the same as fragrance-free. Unscented soaps still have fragrance chemicals added to mask the scent of other ingredients. I have very sensitive skin cannot use unscented products, only fragrance-free (or certain scented products that haven’t yet ruined me like EO Everyone).

My girl had a raised bumpy rash show up right around two months. May have been heat rash, may have been a new sensitivity, who knows. I treated it by washing her with warm water only and applying a thin layer of Vaseline to the affected areas. It has significantly improved since starting this. I have changed nothing else.

PP never said that it looked like dry skin, but that it looked like sensitive skin. As a lifelong eczema sufferer, I can say on good authority that sensitivities can come and go and be caused by anything from diet, the environment, or stress. I would cut out whatever you recently added to your diet (especially the nuts since they’re a common allergen) but also cut out other common sources of skin irritation. It will help you to start fresh and determine what the issues is.

Applying Vaseline or any heavy cream to heat rash only makes it worse. Heat rash is caused by sweat than cannot escape their tiny glands, trapped sweat under the skin. Vaseline or any heavy cream furthur traps it, making it worse. She needs to see her pediatrician to confirm what it is. But very doubtful it's food related, food allergies present rashes in more than one spot.
