Nicholls Volleyball adds three to 2019 roster

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball program received national letters of intent from Jackie Alanis, Lilly Bivens and Devon Bright, as it was announced Tuesday by interim head coach Chelsi Carter.

Alanis, an outside hitter hailing from Rowe High School (McAllen, Texas), was named a MaxPreps Preseason All-American as one of the Top 36 volleyball student-athletes in the nation. She is a four-time All-District First Team performer, earning Most Valuable Player her junior year and Offensive Player of the Year as a senior. Doubling as a track star, Alanis is also a three-time district champion in the triple jump.

Carter on Alanis: "Through the recruiting process, it did not take long for me to realize Alanis is a sweet and proper young woman. On the court Alanis is a quick-twitch, spunky, competitive, and high-flying athlete. She is a great addition, and she will leave her legacy at Nicholls."

Bivens, a 5-9 setter from Providence High School (Clarksville, Indiana), is ranked as the third-best player in the state of Indiana and 44th in the nation by MaxPreps. She holds the Providence all-time single-season assists record with 1,250 helpers and has directed an offense that won four consecutive sectional championships. Bivens captured IHSVCA 4A South All-District honors her final two seasons and concluded her senior campaign by being nominated as an Under Armour All-American.

Carter on Bivens: "Lilly is feisty and knows how to run the show. The accolades she has earned are only the tip of the surface for this young woman. The intangibles she possesses are off the charts, and I cannot wait to have her in our gym."

Bright is a 5-10 outside hitter from Milton High School (Milton, Georgia). She was named 7A All-Region Player of the Year and a member of the First Team, spearheading her team to runners-up at the Georgia 7A State Championship. Bright was named the Georgia MaxPreps Player of the Week on Oct. 14, recording 83 kills, 37 digs, four blocks and three aces in 14 sets.

Carter on Bright: "Devon flies on the volleyball court. She is an absolute gamer and wants the ball in pressure situations.  She had to face adversity early in the recruiting process but never gave up. This adversity pushed her out of her comfort zone and helped make her the stud that she is today. Bright is a passionate, relentless, hard-working, brilliant, creative and savvy young woman, who never let her height define her as a volleyball player. I'm excited to see this young woman grow."
