DELAND, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team swept No. 5 Austin Peay Thursday morning in the first round of the 2019 ASUN Beach Volleyball Championship held at Stetson's Cooper Beach Courts. Coastal surrendered just one set as the Chanticleers picked up their first-ever ASUN tournament victory.
The fourth-seeded Chants (20-9) advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round where they will face No. 1 Stetson (26-8) at 1 p.m.
Coastal swept Austin Peay twice during the regular season, and used the same lineup Thursday morning to shut out the Governors for a third time.
Anett Nemeth and
Kalin Eske picked up Coastal's first point of the match at No. 5, defeating Mimi Arrington and Caroline Waite 21-11, 23-21. On the fourth court,
Aleksandra Djuric and
Shelby Ladewig recorded a 21-13, 21-16 victory to give the Chants a 2-0 match advantage.
As the next group of duos began play, it was Coastal's 2's of
Lucy Campbell and
Anaiah Boyer that provided the match-winning point, taking down Brooke Moore and Ciera Koons, 21-18, 21-18.
Sydney Alvis and
Leah Hardeman provided a 21-14, 21-19 win at No. 1, while
Kate Federico and
Tanner Gauthier recovered from a first-set loss to take the third court in three sets (19-21, 21-16, 15-12) and complete the sweep.
Thursday's win stretched the Chants' winning streak to nine matches – the longest in program history – and gives Coastal its first 20-win season.
