An Egoist is Born – Blue Lock Ep 5 Review

Isagi’s defeat of Team Y unlocks the inner Egoist in him. Chigiri reveals why he joined the Blue Lock Project and confides in Isagi about a past injury.

Jinpachi Ego might actually be a genius for exploiting the success of the best ranked player in each team to motivate the rest to continually train, succeed, and evolve.

I absolutely loved this episode!

Team Z Crushes Team Y

The animation in this episode was truly spectacular! Look at those lines as Isagi is kicking the ball!

I don’t know if Niko noticed or not due to shock, but Isagi basically used the same exact strategy Niko was going to use to score a goal.

Not only did Isagi tell Niko they think the same, he read through his play of passing to Okawa to score a goal (because it’s what he did and lost before coming to Blue Lock Project) and then got himself in place to score the same exact way across the field.

To top it off, Isagi even channeled back the words somebody on Team Z told him (forgot who it was right now) about not being a striker because he hesitated to take the shot.

I loved that Bachira and Isagi’s non-verbal monster communication came back into play, as well. To be quite honest, as soon as Isagi’s eyes turned blue and the monster took over I was waiting for Bachira to come back into the fold. I don’t know if Kunigami has a monster yet, but he seems on board with Bachira and Isagi’s plans and is more helpful than harmful.

Unlike Raichi, whose function literally just seems to be ball-hogging and hating on Isagi while being slightly out of frame in each shot. Or Chigiri, whose backstory was almost kind of disappointing to hear.

Chigiri Hyouma Backstory

Chigiri has become socially withdrawn and refuses to actually try due to a past torn ACL injury.

For a soccer player, any leg-related injuries could be a career destroyer, so on some level, I can absolutely understand Chigiri’s hesitancy to reinjure himself. On the other hand, however – joining Blue Lock Project just to find a reason to quit soccer for good is not something you would truly do if you wanted to quit.

Isagi even tells Chigiri this, and instead of taking the helpful advice in stride Chigiri lashes out and claims that Isagi doesn’t know him.

Well sure – Isagi doesn’t know Chigiri.

But Chigiri also doesn’t know Isagi, yet through watching him on the field and playback footage of their game could tell Isagi that his secret weapon was spatial awareness. Despite this being a spot-on analysis of Isagi’s abilities, Chigiri somehow isn’t open to receive a spot-on analysis of his current situation from Isagi.

Anyway…

Isagi Becomes the Heart of Team Z

I thought the last shot of the Team (minus Chigiri) hanging back to train with Isagi was pretty cool.

Sure, while I only genuinely believed Bachira and Kunigami actually wanted to help each other grow as players, it was still a nice gesture. The rest of Team Z was just tagging along to spy on their competition and enhance their own ranks.

But, that’s the name of the game: learning Soccer from Zero and becoming Egoists in their own rights.

Tell me your thoughts.

Jinpachi Ego is truly a menace with a vicious monster inside of him. I wonder why he quit playing soccer?

Do you think it was hypocritical of Chigiri to correctly analyze Isagi and then reject the astute deduction of his own predicament?

Is Raichi all talk and no action?

Will Team Z be able to defeat Team W?
