ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The 23rd ranked Lewis women's volleyball team remained undefeated at Neil Carey Arena with a 3-1 win over William Jewell on Friday night.
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) led the offense with 19 kills while
Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) dished out 39 assists while adding 14 digs and seven kills.
The Flyers (17-6, 8-3 GLVC) won the opening set 25-17 but struggled on offense hitting just .077 (12 kills/9 errors/39 total attacks). It was the defense that led the charge holding the Cardinals (8-18, 2-10 GLVC) to a negative .056 hitting percentage and recorded three blocks. Lewis used a 6-1 run midway through the stanza to extend its lead to 11-5 on a kill from Hyland.
The Flyers led by as many as nine points in the frame and never allowed William Jewell to get closer than five points.
Lewis recorded 13 kills in the second set but committed eight errors as the Cardinals were able to even the match at a set apiece with a 25-22 win. There were 14 ties and seven lead changes in the stanza.
WJC used a 5-1 run late in the frame to grab a 24-20 lead. The Flyers cut the deficit to 24-22 on a pair of Cardinal miscues but were unable to get any closer.
Lewis trailed by as many as three points in the swing set before rallying late to grab a 25-21 victory. The Flyers hit .359 in the stanza recording 19 kills against five errors. Hyland and
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) combined for 12 of those 19 kills.
Lewis trailed by six nearly halfway through the fourth set before going on an 8-1 run to grab the lead on a double block from Becker and
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg). The two sides then began to trade points. With the set tied at 20 the Flyers were able to close it out by scoring five of the final six points to win 25-21.
Lewis finished the match hitting .198 (58 kills/26 errors/162 total attacks). Hyland finished with a match-high in kills while
Morgan Goodman (Cedar Hills, Mo./Home) added a career-high nine kills and Venema added eight kills.
The Cardinals were held to a .147 hitting percentage and was led by Jenna Rau with 11 kills while Raechel Meisinger added nine kills.
The Flyers are back at home on Saturday hosting the 14th ranked Rockhurst Hawks in an NCAA Showcase match beginning at 3:05 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena. The Hawks fell in five sets at Indianapolis on Friday night.
