It’s 2004. You get this text on your new Helio Hero. What do you do? Africa’s cellphone boom was a wacky era... Between 2000 and 2010, the number of cellphone connections leaped from 17 million to 552 million. Very quickly, everyone had a cellphone. It was how you communicated, sent money and accessed services. Entrepreneurs piggybacking on this wave saw opportunity and rubbed their palms. They built news and entertainment products for mobile. An entrepreneur, Geoffrey Murage, started an SMS dating company. It was targeted for busy professionals to create profiles, find potential partners and start conversations via SMS. - I would guess its a blind date - but on your Nokia. Kind of like the pic below? But one company really thrived in this wacky era. By 2007 they had sold ringtones to over 8 million users. In the process, they built systems to accept mobile payments. And last year, they processed over $14 billion in payments. That company is called Cellulant, and it’s East Africa's silent giant. Tomorrow I’m diving into Cellulant’s wild story. Amazing. Cellulant is indeed a very silent but super tech giant and very responsive to the Kenyan and African market at large. Kudos team and for we remember those who perished in the Riverside attack. Gone but not forgotten. #AfricaRise #TechGiants #CellulantKenya
