Starboard view of oil tanker YO-196 on Lake Michigan June 13, 1945, just prior to its delivery to the U.S. Navy on June 16. The YO-196 (Hull 402) was one of a number of oil tankers, more properly identified as gasoline barges, built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, which was better known for its production of 28 World War II submarines. The YO-196 keel was laid in Manitowoc, Wisconsin on January 6, 1945, and the tanker was launched a little more than three months later on March 24, 1945. The steel-hulled ship had an overall length of 174 feet and a full displacement of 1,390 tons. She had one officer and a crew of 22. The YO-196 was disposed of in support of a Fleet training exercise in March 2000, 55 years after her launching in Manitowoc.
