COVINGTON, La. – #RV University of New Orleans (14-10) cruised to two victories on day one of the Southland Showcase, defeating #RV University of Central Arkansas 4-1 and Nicholls State University 4-0 Thursday morning at Digs Volleyball Complex.
Beginning the day with a fellow team receiving votes in the AVCA national poll, the Privateers and Sugar Bears traded flights with
Rhyan Rand and
Madison Miller taking No. 5 21-16, 21-16 and UCA winning No. 4.
However, the top flights were clutch down the wire to take the opening match 4-1 as
Veronica Corcoran and
Rachel Kuhn took No. 1 21-14, 21-19,
Blessing Dunn and
Brianna Vega were victorious at No. 2 21-19, 21-17 and
Victoria Corcoran and
Ally Carr earned the win at No. 3 25-23, 21-17.
Against the Colonels, No. 2 and the exhibition were unfinished.
Victoria Corcoran and Carr clinched a 2-0 day with a 21-10, 21-8 win at No. 3,
Ehize Omoghibo and
Alexa Spartz took No. 4 21-7, 21-13 and Rand and Miller stamped the victory for UNO with a 21-9, 21-16 win at No. 5.
At the top flight,
Veronica Corcoran and Kuhn won 21-16, 21-12.
NEXT UP
On the docket Friday are A&M-Corpus Christi (10:30 a.m.), Abilene Christian (1 p.m.) and HBU (3:30 p.m.).
The championship is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday. Following the title match, seniors
Madison Miller and
Blessing Dunn will be honored for their contributions to the beach volleyball program.
SEASON NUMBERS
Veronica Corcoran and Kuhn are 19-5 at the top spot this season.
Victoria Corcoran and Carr have 13 wins as a duo and 15 overall. Dunn, Vega, Miller and Rand each have 13 wins and Spartz has 11 in her first season on the Lakefront.
The Privateers are 5-1 at Digs this season and 7-1 versus the future Southland foes/this weekend's opponents.
