I wanted to build a PC as a replacement for my cable boxes and DVR, using a slim, AV-component styled and completely silent and fanless case. Since I also wanted top performance, I wanted a motherboard that could be tweaked to allow the best mix of performance, energy consumption and heat. The ASUS H77 PRO seemed like the best bet for me, and so far I haven't been disappointed.

The fit was perfect in my fanless HTPC case...it uses a network of copper heat pipes to direct heat from the CPU mount to cooling fins on the outside of the case, and everything fit without a problem. The motherboard itself fits well and aligns perfectly with the connector cutouts on my case. Unlike some other brands I've used in the past, everything is a precise fit - screw holes line up exactly, etc.

I installed an Intel i7-3770K CPU, 16GB of memory, the Ceton PCIe M-card tuner, a SSD boot disk and a pair of 4TB drives in a 6Gb SATA RAID-0 configuration. I'm using the on-board gigabit LAN and video with the HDMI output connected to my AV receiver at 1080p, I have the USB 3 connector wired to a front panel USB port, and my case supports an IR remote control capability that controls power and media center operation.

For a mid-priced motherboard, I've been really impressed. After some trial and error, I've landed on overclocking the memory about 20% and my 3.5Ghz CPU runs reliably at 4Ghz. Best of all, in my totally fanless case, even overclocked, the motherboard temperature reported by the Asus monitoring utility is only 93 degrees, and the external fins on my HTPC case don't seem to exceed about 85 degrees (Fahrenheit).

I've been using the Windows 8 Media Center as my DVR software, and once I got past a few setup problems, it's worked without incident. Between the fast CPU, SSD and overclocked memory, this is a blazing system. I'm using large disks (4TB) in Advanced Format 4K sector mode, and I/O throughput is adequate to allow seven channels of HDTV to be recorded concurrently (in addition the the 4-channel Ceton card, I also have a HDHomeRun on my network).

I've been nothing but impressed with this system, and as I write this, the system has been up and running 24x7 for about six weeks without even a reboot. This is stable, fast performance at a reasonable price point.

Definitely worth a look for your next system.

I purchased from amazon itself. I am not enamored of associated 3rd party shippers from my previous experience.

Very good instructions, good build quality and good drivers. I have had the best luck with ASUS motherboards in the past and so far this one seems to be a winner.

I am building a quiet SFF HTPC, so the support for intel integrated graphics and HDMI was very important as well as alternative of adding PCI-E card if necessary. My hope is 3rd gen i5 with intel graphics 4000 should be stutter free on blu-ray and h.264 recorded TV. To maximize the chances I went with i5 3570K and Kingston Technology HyperX 8 GB (2x4 GB Modules) 1600 MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Kit (PC3 12800), which this MB supports.

Build went smoothly. I am now running tests to make sure graphics system is up to the task. My previous experience with intel integrated graphics has put me in the "show me" state ;-)

See my review of SilverStone Sugo SG02B-F ABS/SECC Steel MicroATX Desktop Computer Case - Retail (Black) for more details.

Update:
Hooked machine to my Samsung TV. Plays blu-disks and recorded h.264 very well. HDMI video/sound recognized without a hiccup. Very quiet. Much quieter than my Xbox 360 that I use as video extender. MB and CPU temps staying in 30's. All good.

I will update this review if the replacement motherboard actually works. The first one from Amazon was essentially dead on arrival. Installed it in a new system build with an Intel Core i7-3770 (Ivy Bridge) CPU and Kingston HyperX 1600 DDR3 DIMMS (2x4-GB) that was listed as compatible memory for this motherboard. Did not install any discrete graphics cards. Power supply is a new Cooler Master 800W Silent Pro Gold.

Upon powering up the system, nothing appeared on the monitor. In fact, the monitor indicated there was no signal. Neither a VGA or DVI connection worked, and tried a couple different monitors. Never would boot up to show the Power-On-Self-Test (POST) screen and was not able to enter the BIOS setup routine. Went through all the trouble-shooting routines to no avail. One short beep code, fans turned on. Spoke with ASUS tech support by phone (the tech person answered my call immediately and was very knowledgeable). He confirmed that the board is essentially DOA and recommended returning it for a replacement.

I will update this review after I try the replacement board. The tech rep from ASUS did say they were having a lot of problems with all their boards in the P8 class, unfortunately. Makes me almost want to try a different brand. This board has lots of great features and the price is right, so if I can get one that actually works, it may be perfect.

UPDATE: (5/24/12) After receiving a replacement motherboard from Amazon, the exact same thing happened: Motherboard beeps once, acts like it wants to connect to my monitor, then the screen goes black and stays that way. Because ASUS tech support said they are having lots of issues with this particular board, I replaced it with an Intel DH77EB that I bought from Amazon and that board works PERFECTLY!! So I am just going to return this
ASUS board for a refund and stick with the Intel board. I would have liked to use the ASUS, as it has more ports and better options through its BIOS, but for my needs, the Intel is fine and it works! Plus, it is a bit less expensive.

Enermax - ECA3175-L+N500-SA - Boîtier PC - ATX - Ventilateur 12 cm - USB 3.0 - 500 W - Noir

3.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on December 13, 2012
