High-Definition Drivers for Full-Range Sound

The Downtown headset provides a balanced sound experience. Powerful 40-millimeter drivers produce crystal-clear highs and mids and deep, rich bass without distortion. A closed-back design ensures good bass response and keeps you absorbed in the music.

MusicSeal Technology for Music Privacy

Whether you're listening to the guitar riffs of a funk metal band or the lifting soprano of an opera singer, Philips' MusicSeal technology allows you to keep your favorite music all to yourself. This design includes double-layer walls inside the ear shells and a firm seal between the edge of the ear cushion and ear cup housing to seal in beats and prevent ambient noise from disrupting your sound.

Comfortable Foam Ear Cushions Isolate Sound

The Downtown's deluxe, noise-isolating ear cushions are made of memory foam, which molds itself to the shape of your ear for hours of comfort. The foam also forms a seal that preserves bass response while blocking out external noise so you can focus on the music.

Comfortable Headband and Durable Metal Construction

The Downtown features lightweight spring-steel construction in the ear shell frame and headband, which is covered with cushy, heat-sealed fabric to make it even more comfortable. The headphones' flat, anti-tangle cable won't knot up, improving both your listening experience and their durability.

Convenient In-Line Mic for Phone Calls

For easy operation, the Downtown includes a sleek, in-line mic for use with your mobile phone so you can switch seamlessly from listening to chatting.

The in-line mic is compatible with iPhone, BlackBerry, HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson mobile phones.

Not same headphones as shown in product photos
The headphones I received aren't the same style as the product photos. Instead of a metal headband wrapped in purple padding the one I received is plastic with a grey foam cushion underneath (see my pics). If I hadn't needed the headphones immediately I would have returned them. The sound quality is ok and I like the purple color but the quality is not what I was expecting. The plastic parts makes them look cheap.

I knew these headphones had gotten some good reviews, including from Innerfideility.com, when they came out and were supposed to be a bargain at $100. When I saw them on Amazon for like $30, I ordered them up. I have been extremely satisfied with them. I like the flat cable, which never ever tangles. The cable isn't removable so if it goes bad you may be out of luck but it seems well made for the price class and I think it will stand up for a long time. The headband is metal and very sturdy, ingeniously wrapped in fabric. This fabric can get a little dirty with a lot of use, but can be removed and gently washed. I worry it will shrink washing it (definitely do not machine wash and put in a dryer - just hand wash with Woolite or something gentle in a sink), but may try that out at some point.

The headphones themselves are very, very comfortable. I can wear them for hours and they don't bother my ears. They are also easy to take on and off repeatedly as I sometimes have to do. These have become my main headphones for casual listening to talk radio, music, making phone calls during the day. The sound quality is extremely good. Highs are very clear but not sibilant or harsh, the mid-range is very detailed and articulate - hard to believe for the price actually. I think they sound better than my V-Moda M-80s, which is a $200 headphone that is highly rated by many. I also have a Soul by Ludacris SL100 that can't remotely compare to these Philips Downtowns. The bass on these Philips headphones is clear, but a little lacking. Particularly if you like headphones with pumped up exaggerated bass, these are not for you. I wish the bass was a little more present, but you can boost the bass a little with EQ and it sounds good. That is really the only thing sound-wise I would change on these headphones. Also, although not a negative, these are not the most sensitive headphones. Compared to the V-Moda or Soul headphones, I need to turn the volume setting up more to get these to play at a desired volume. They definitely benefit from having a portable amplifier, but it isn't needed. They play fine out of my Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sansa mp3 player.

So if you are willing to do some EQ, or don't like a lot of bass, I highly recommend these headphones for both sound quality and comfort.

First of all, the sound seems good, but I'm not too picky so if you're a sound quality guru, might not be up to par. The headphones themselves seem well constructed and sturdy, with a metal headband and sturdy cord. The cord itself isn't quite long enough for me, and is sometimes limiting; plus it tends to curl as it still hasn't relaxed from being in the packaging.

The most important reason why I docked two stars was because these headphones get quite uncomfortable after a couple hours of use. The memory foam ear pieces were comfortable in the store, and I was hoping that after a couple weeks of "break-in" time, the headphones would get more comfortable. Unfortunately this was not the case. I wear these practically all day, from 7am when I catch the bus, all day at work until 5, and then until 6pm when I get home. I never had any issues with comfort from my Bose headphones, but these hurt my outer ear, pressing on them uncomfortably.

Probably not much of an issues since most people don't wear their headphones all day. But something to take into consideration.

OK, So I saw a commercial on these headphones a while ago on the net. I thought these sets looked very stylish and stuck in my head for a while. Upon reading several reviews, I decided to check them out. I am by no means an audiophile, but I do love sound since I used to DJ and have become very particular. So, let’s get into what I think of the Philips CitiScape Downtown Headset (I like to give a rating to what’s important to me).
LOOKS: 9.0 -These headsets are very, very pretty. The earpieces are big but nicely rounded and simple. The headband is metal but it’s covered by a nice piece of clothing and looks like a silk wrapping. This gives it a certain elegance. The cord is really nice and does not come with bends and kinks that take too long to smooth out. Having said that, I do have an issue; these headphones could be “too pretty”. I mean, I like classy headsets but wearing these in public makes me feel a bit too self-conscious. Some people may definitely like this, however.
BUILD: 8.0 -Right away you’d think they are kind of delicate. The ear cushions are made of soft memory padding and a thin cloth covers the drivers. I already noticed some slight scratching on the cushions. The earpad hinges seem a bit weak, but held steady so far. However, I wouldn’t want to step on them for sure. The headband is made of a thin metal strip that I am not planning on bending too much any time soon. The cable seems of very sturdy stuff. Only time will tell if they can survive the treatment I give my other headsets.
COMFORT: 10.0 -This is where the CitiScape shine. These babies feel like soft pillows are pressing against your ears. They are incredibly comfortable and light, in my opinion. I’ve worn them for more 2 hours a session and have yet to feel fatigued. My usual problem with on-ear headsets is that I wear glasses and after a short while, it can be even painful. Not with these guys. They also stay on my head while moving around and I don’t have to re-adjust every 2 minutes.
SOUND: 9.0 – I am happy to report that these cans produce decent sound. I will be honest, though, they are not on par with, say, Audiotechnica, Sennheiser or even Sony (at this price range). However, these do have very clear sound all-around. The highs aren’t too bright, the mids are distinctive enough and the low is pretty warm. They do seem to have a bit of a bass effect but it’s not overwhelming at all.
FUNCTIONALITY: 8.0 – The “Musicseal” feature is impressive. There’s very little ambient noise heard and there is virtually no leakage at 70%-80% volumes (I don’t do higher). While these may be very comfortable to wear and walk around with, they are not very portable. They do not fold in any way. The ear cups are so big that placing them in a bag can be a challenge. So they either have to be worn around your neck or carry them in your hands. It would have been nice for Philips to provide a carrying bag or case.
OVERALL: 8.8 The Philips CitiScape Downtown Headset is a very classy, decent sounding and incredibly comfortable set. Although the construction and ease of transportation leaves a lot to be desired, the pros outweigh the cons. These have become my go-to headsets for late-night listening while my better-half is asleep, since the Musicseal ear cups do their job so well. I recommend these guys just for that alone.
