Works as advertised with the NEX5 and my Minolta, Sigma and Tamron A-mount full frame lenses. Occasionally reports the lens isn't connected, usually find the problem is between the LAEA1 and the lens itself, simply remove the lens from the adapter and put it back on again, ensuring that you hear it click into place.

Using the older lenses can make the camera feel a little front heavy as one would expect, so using the standard strap might make it feel a little unbalanced. I don't know what weight the lens mount is meant to support (one of my lenses is about 900gm) but I use a cross-body strap that attaches to the tripod mount and connecting that to the LAEA1 provides more support.

I have a Sony Alpha A65 DSLR and figured that buying this adaptor would save me $$ on buying additional lenses for my Nex-7... Not the case. First, my zoom lens doesn't work with either the Manual or Auto Focus. Second, my 35mm takes (and I timed it) a full 8-13 seconds (depending on the shot) to focus with the auto-focus. Hope nothing moves on a shot you want to get. I gave up after (2) lenses didn't work right, didn't even want to see what issue would be with my wide-angle. I would recommend you not waste your money buying this adaptor, it will not save you anything, but cause you to be frustrated, miss shots and just hate what you're doing with the camera. If you have a Nex-Series Camera with an E-Mount and want more than just the standard lens, go buy additional and put the money that you've saved by not buying the adaptor toward the lens. You'll thank me ;)

**NOTE** This review is ONLY for the LA-EA1 Adaptor - I LOVE my A65 and Nex-7 Sony Cameras. They are both top-of-the-line DSLR/CSLR cameras, especially the Nex-7.

Bought this for my NEX-3 so that I could use my Sony A-mount lenses with the NEX and still have AF rather than buying a cheaper adapter that would allow the A-mount lenses to attach to the camera, but would have to be used in MF. I just don't have the patience for this. It takes forever to auto focus when you use this adapter with the SAL55-200 Sony A-mount lens. I guess that is fine for most landscape photography, but with people, animals, or any moving subject, you can just about forget it. The product seems well built though I am certainly no expert. The product works pretty much as advertised--they admit it could take up to 7 seconds or so to focus. But you have to use it to understand just how aggravating it is waiting for it to focus. I think you can definitely get a $50 MF adapter for the E-mount system and focus in manually and shoot a subject just as fast or faster than you can using this AF adapter--- and not have to spend over $125. I am going to try another few days to adjust to it, but it seems pretty certain I will return this item. I just don't think its a viable solution to the problem of using non E-mount AF lenses with this camera.

What to say about this adapter....

If you want to be able to use your Alpha lens on your NEX/E-mount camera, this certainly works. The removable tripod mount on the lens is a nice touch and works quite well, if you add a quick release plate. +1 I tested this with my Alpha A-6000.

Pros:
* Any Alpha/Maxxum AF lens will mount on this adapter, allowing you to use Alpha optics on your NEX camera body. Screw drive lenses' screw drive will just push aside, so they will mount on this as well, just in manual focus mode.
* Will allow AF with SAM and SSM Lenses. I also tested this against a Tamron 24-70mm/2.8 HSM lens and it worked for that lens as well. (see note below)
* No light loss. Since there is no optical element in the middle, image quality is as good as your Alpha lens.

Cons:
* AF is SLOW. Whether I used SAM, SSM, or HSM lenses, the autofocus speed is incredibly slow. It seems the camera switches to using contrast auto-focus mechanisms. This makes even an f/2.8 HSM lens go super slow, making it next to useless for anything that moves. Native E-mount lenses will outperform AF performance here.

If you want to use Alpha/Maxxum lenses on your NEX and you want fast AF, I strongly recommend getting the LAE2 or the LAE4 versions of the adapter. The SLT AF mechanism in those adapters, along with screw drive capabilities, will give your NEX/E-Mount camera full access to those lenses.

This is a genuine adapter so unlike the knock off vintage lens to digital camera adapters can focus to infinity. The price is about 4 times more than the third parties but is definitely worth it

This LA-EA1 adapter is for MANUAL focus only on most of the A-mount lenses with the "AF/MF" switch. "AF/MF" SAM" lenses with internal motor also do not work for auto focus.
