According to a report at BoxingScene.com, a third fight for the Malignaggi-Broner Showtime card on June 22 in Brooklyn is being worked on right now, which would see 154-pound prospect Jermell Charlo face Demetrius Hopkins. No deal is complete, but on paper, it's an easy fight to make.
Charlo (20-0, 10 KO) is a 22-year-old fighter out of Houston, whose twin brother Jermall also fights. Of the two, Jermell is considered the better prospect, and has the more advanced career at the moment. In January, he knocked out Harry Joe Yorgey on the Matthysse-Dallas card, which also aired on Showtime.
Hopkins (33-2-1, 13 KO), the 32-year-old nephew of Bernard Hopkins, has never really broken through, but is a talented fighter, if far from the elite ranks of the sport. His last fight came in February, when he dominated Charles Whittaker in Atlantic City on the Broner-Rees undercard.
It's a fine test for Charlo if the fight gets made, easily his best opponent to date, and definitely not a gimme.
