"The Mercedes-Benz W116 is a series of flagship luxury saloons produced from September 1972 until 1980 and were the first models to be called S-Class. This was the first Mercedes saloon to feature the brand new corporate styling theme which was to be continued until 1993. After the 1973 fuel crisis, a long-wheelbase version of the 280 was added to the line-up the SEL. In 1975, the W116 was upgraded with a new fuel injection system to comply with revised exhaust emission standards in European markets. A slight power reduction was a result of this update. In 1978, a series of engine upgrades restored original performance levels with new fuel injection systems. From 1975 onward they used the K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection system, a less complicated system that proved to be much more reliable in the long run.
This delightfully handsome Mercedes was imported into New Zealand by a German Professor in March 1980 with 5,571km on the odometer. Since then the car has had three owners and has maintained its largely original condition, specification and more importantly documents. Presenting in superb condition this 280 SEL has the all important factory fitted air conditioning.
