    Sensitivity

An assessment of how loud wire connected headphones will play for a given audio input signal level. This is an important consideration if the headphones will be used with audio devices that have relatively low maximum audio output signal levels like some battery powered portables. Some models may have 2 sensitivity levels given: one with the highest selectable setting and the other with the lowest selectable setting. Not applicable for wireless headphones that do not have a cord connected option.

Closed headphones rest on or around the user's ears and rely on a seal between the user's ears and the headphone for proper bass response, and somewhat isolate the user from outside sounds. Open air models rest on or around the user's ears but do not rely on a seal between the user's ears and headphones for proper bass response and do not isolate the user from outside sounds. Ear insert models are inserted into and are held in place by the ear canal; they rely on a seal between the user's ears and the headphones for proper bass response, and somewhat isolate the user from outside sounds. Earbud models rest in the area outside of the ear canal and may extend into the ear canal but do not rely on the ear canal to be held in place; they do not rely on a seal between the user's ears and headphones for proper bass response and do not isolate the user from outside sounds.

    Detailed Test Results

Design and features:This portable earbud model doesn't have active noise reduction, but their earplug-like design helps to reduce both outside noise and sound leaking out into your environment. The earphones have medium-high sensitivity, so they can provide satisfying volume levels when used with home audio equipment and even lower-powered portable audio devices. This model comes with three pairs of earpieces in various sizes.

Sound quality: We found the RP-HJE120 delivers good overall sound with a warm character. The pronounced one-note bass has good impact but only so-so definition, and deep bass is lacking. Midrange is slightly muffled, and treble sounds a bit dry and spitty, with a rolled-off upper treble. Overall sound is somewhat closed in, with compressed dynamics. This model and the Panasonic RP-HJC120 have the same sound character.

Comfort: We found that these earphones fit and stay in place with no problems; the fit is more like an in-ear earphone than an earbud, so the sense of pressure in the ear opening might be uncomfortable for some.

    About

The Panasonic RP-HJE120 portable isolating earbud-style earphones sit on and extend into the ear opening. These earphones have a 43-inch audio cord with a stereo mini-plug. The RP-HJE120 comes with three pairs of earpieces in various sizes, and is covered by a relatively short 3-month warranty. This model is similar to the Panasonic RP-HJC120, which adds a built-in mic and cellphone call connect/disconnect feature, plus and iPod player function controls and a volume control that works with iPods, iPads, and iPhones.
