Got a big collection of DVDs? This projector makes 'em look their best
As you'd expect, Blu-ray movies look spectacular on a large screen. But with some projectors, regular DVDs can look a little soft. That's not a worry with the 8700 UB. It uses some very sophisticated video processing to really clean up and sharpen DVD pictures. First, it uses the Silicon Optix Reon-VX video processor, which is universally acclaimed as one of the best available. Also impressive is Epson's proprietary Super Resolution "smart" detail enhancement, which makes standard-def video look closer to high-definition.
Whether it's movie night or game day, you'll enjoy a stellar picture
The best way to watch movies with the 8700 UB is in a totally-darkened room. Select the THX® picture mode and you'll enjoy a superbly accurate and lifelike picture. Some of the brighter picture modes work great in rooms with some light from windows or lamps. This projector also includes "frame interpolation" processing, which makes video motion look smoother. It's very effective for sports, and smooths out camera pans in movies, too.
You can put this projector almost anywhere
When it comes to placement options, the 8700 UB is about as flexible as it gets. It will project a flawless picture when placed anywhere from a low coffee table, to a ceiling-mount, to a shelf mounted on the rear wall of your room. Horizontal and vertical "lens shift" allow you to position the projector off-center and still get a perfectly true image. The projector's high-quality lens also gives you a wider zoom range than most models, for added placement flexibility.
For optimum performance, a separate projection screen is recommended.

Features
THX Certified Display: The Epson Home Cinema 8700UB has earned the THX certification for display technology. The THX certification ensures accurate and exceptional picture quality, based on meeting or exceeding performance standards for black levels, resolution, contrast, color gamut, and signal processing. In addition, the 8700UB has a THX Movie mode that lets you experience studio quality color, black levels, and clean-signal processing with few calibration adjustments.
Silicon Optix HQV Reon-VX Processor: The built-in HQV Reon-VX processor from Silicon Optix ensures you get natural, smooth image quality. The "1080Perfect" video processing gives you more film-like images, free of block noise or artifacts.
C²Fine, 3LCD, 3-chip Technology: The 8700UB features C²Fine 12-bit technology and 3LCD, 3-chip technology to give you rich, vibrant images for enjoying spectacular movies, games, and sporting events in your home, or to deliver sizzling business presentations at the office. This technology requires 25% less electricity per lumen of brightness when compared to 1-chip DLP projectors.
Projection Lamp: The projector uses an energy-efficient E-TORL 200-watt Ultra High Efficiency (UHE) lamp with a life span of approximately 4000 hours in the Normal Mode. In the ECO mode, the life span is increased to approximately 5000 hours. The lamp (Part # V13H010L49) and air filter (Part # V13H134A21) are the only user-serviceable parts.
Light Output: In the normal mode, the Home Cinema 8700UB outputs 1600 lumens of white light and 1600 lumens of color light for bright, balanced colorful images. The white light output is measured using ISO 21118, a more rigid standard than the ANSI lumens rating used by many competitors. The projector is capable of a dynamic contrast ratio up to 200,000:1.
Native Resolution/Resizing: The Home Cinema 8700UB has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio), and is capable of 1080p Full High Definition performance. You can resize your images by changing the aspect ratio to 4:3 or 16:9. With a commercially available anamorphic lens (Epson part #ELPALK2), you can display images recorded at a 2.35:1 aspect ratio (Cinemascope) on a 16:9 screen without the black bars, using the projector's built-in scaler.
Multiple Sources: The Home Cinema 8700UB has inputs for multiple sources to give you lots of choices. For connecting to your video equipment, the unit features two HDMI (Ver.1.3) inputs, a component video input, an S-Video input, and a composite video input. You can also connect your computer to the projector via the VGA input. Two loops are provided on the back panel to provide anchor points for securing the connecting cables with commercially available cable ties.
Compatible Video Formats: The projector supports analog video in NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats, and automatically adjusts to the incoming signals. It can receive these formats as composite video, S-video, or component video. The projector also supports digital video (SDTV, HDTV) through the HDMI and component video ports. The following resolutions can be displayed:
- Composite Video or S-Video:
- NTSC: 720 x 480
- PAL/SECAM: 720 x 576
- Component Video:
- SDTV: 480i, 576i, 480p, 576p
- HDTV: 720p, 1080i, 1080p
- HDMI:
- VGA: 640 x 480
- SDTV: 480i, 576i, 480p, 576p
- HDTV: 720p, 1080i, 1080p
- Analog RGB (computer display):
- VGA: 640 x 480
- SVGA: 800 x 600
- XGA: 1024 x 768
- SXGA: 1152 x 864, 1280 x 960, 1208 x 1024
- WXGA: 1280 x 768, 1360 x 768, 1280 x 800
- Mac: 640 x 480 (Mac13"), 832 x 624 (Mac16"), 1024 x 768 (Mac19"), 1152 x 870 (Mac21")
Control Inputs: The projector has a 9-pin RS-232C port for connecting to an AV Controller. In addition, there is a 3.5mm mini-jack port that outputs a 12-volt DC signal when the projector is turned on. This allows a central control system monitor whether the projector is on or off, and can be used to raise or lower your projector screen automatically when the projector is in use. It can also be used to engage a motorized anamorphic lens when that aspect ratio is selected.
Color Modes: The Home Cinema 8700UB offers seven color modes to optimize viewing for different environments and image content. The Color Mode adjusts the brightness, contrast, and color for the best possible picture. A different color mode can be selected for each input source. You can select from these Color Modes:
- Dynamic: for projecting the brightest picture available
- Living Room: for watching television programs during the day
- THX: for projecting natural, accurate colors in a dimly lit room
- Theatre: for viewing movies in a dimly lit room
- Theatre Black 1: for images that are close to those in professional-use broadcast monitors. Use in a fully darkened room
- Theatre Black 2: to emphasize rich colors, like those seen in movies at the theater. Use in a fully darkened room
- x.v.Color: for the most natural color reproduction when viewing movies through HDMI
Advanced Color Adjustments: You can adjust the gamma and individual RGBCMY color tones using the remote control. There are five gamma settings to choose from (2.0 to 2.4), or you can customize your own settings from your image or a displayed graph. You can also individually adjust the hue, saturation, and brightness for each of the red (R), green (G), blue (B), cyan (C), magenta (M), and yellow (Y) components.
Note: These adjustments are not available when the Color Mode is set to x.v.Color.
Auto Iris: The Home Cinema 8700UB features an advanced, dual-layer, high-speed auto iris function that adjusts the light output based on the gamma and black/white levels of your projected content up to 60 times per second.
Lens: The projector's Fujinon OptiCinema 2.1x projection lens is a precision, high-quality, optical-grade system. It offers excellent picture uniformity and clarity across the screen. If the projector cannot be placed perfectly centered between the top and bottom of the screen, you can use the lens shift dials to reposition the image. The top-mounted lens shift controls off approximately 96% vertical and 47% horizontal lens shift without image distortion. An anamorphic lens kit is available from the manufacturer for displaying 2.35:1 images.
Adjustable Image Size: The Home Cinema 8700UB projector can produce an image that is adjustable between 30" and 300" (measured diagonally).
Lens Projection Distance: The projector's adjustable lens provides a wide range of placement possibilities for a given screen size. The projection distance (distance from lens to screen) range is 2.85' to 62.83'. The distance for several screen sizes at 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios are given below:
Screen Size | Projection Distance (in feet) | |
---|---|---|
16:9 | 4:3 | |
30" | 2.8 to 6.2 | 3.5 to 7.6 |
40" | 3.8 to 8.3 | 4.7 to 10.1 |
60" | 5.8 to 12.5 | 7.1 to 15.3 |

150" | 14.7 to 31.4 | 18 to 38.4 |
200" | 19.7 to 41.8 | 24.2 to 51.3 |
Projector Controls: The projector features controls on the top, front, rear and one side. The controls include:
- Top Panel:
- Power: turns projector on or off
- Source: switches the video input source
- Lens Shift: rotary dials for horizontal and vertical lens shift
- Indicators: LEDs indicate power on (inside power button), lamp on, and temperature warning
- Front (on lens): zoom ring and focus ring

Remote Control: In addition to the control panel, the projector can be controlled by the supplied wireless remote control, which has a range of approximately 30 feet. The projector has infrared receivers on the front and rear to give you control from most anywhere in the room.
Sleep Mode: The projector turns off automatically when no video signal is received for a preset amount of time. You can set the sleep mode to 5, 10, or 30 minutes.
Mounting Options: The Home Cinema 8700UB can be placed on a tabletop or inverted and mounted on the ceiling. It can be used for front or rear projection. For tabletop use, you can adjust the image position by raising or lowering the two front feet. For ceiling mounting, you will need an optional projector ceiling mount. Five 4mm threaded screw holes are provided on the bottom for a ceiling mount. A commercially-available Kensington security lock can be attached to the unit to prevent theft when installed in a public location.
Warranty and Extra Care Home Service: The projector is covered by a 2-year parts and labor warranty, while the lamp is covered for 90 days. Included with the warranty, Epson offers Extra Care Home Service. A replacement unit (in most cases, a refurbished unit) will be shipped to you immediately. (A credit card is required for security deposit.) If it's important that you receive your original projector back, you should use the basic carry-in service instead of Home Service.
