The end of a Hollywood power couple: The rise and fall of Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber's 11-year relationship in pictures as they announce separation

Earlier this month, they were spotted holding hands at the Toronto Film Festival.

But behind the scenes, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber's 11-year relationship was falling apart.

The A-list couple, who share two young children, confirmed their separation to ET on Monday.

They famously never married, but were long regarded as one of the most stable pairings in Hollywood. 

TMZ has reported they were discussing a split as early as January and were already living separately.

But there were no signs of 'trouble in paradise' on social media, as Naomi and Liev often shared happy family photos.

One of their first appearances coincidentally took place in September 2005 at the Toronto Film Festival.

In an ironic twist, they returned to the festival this month for the premiere of The Bleeder, in which they play a married couple.

Unbeknownst to their fans, it would be their final red carpet sighting as a couple.

The couple first met at the 2005 Met Gala in New York, and Liev later told Esquire  that Naomi appeared like 'a ray of light.'

The 48-year-old claimed she made the first move by inviting him to a nightclub later that night.

But when Liev showed up, Naomi was already partying with actor Sean Penn. 

He confessed to feeling embarrassed and self-conscious 'waiting for (his) turn' and told her he was leaving.

Liev recalled: 'She chased me outside and said, "Don't you want my digits?"'

Liev notably joined his partner at the December 2005 premiere of her film King Kong in New York.

In March 2007, Naomi showed off her baby bump as the couple were expecting their first child together. 

They welcomed Alexander "Sasha" Pete in July 2007 in Los Angeles.

She fell pregnant again the next year, and the pair were pictured in NYC two months before she gave birth to Samuel "Sammy" Kai in December 2008.

In the years since, the New York-based couple have often been spotted enjoying days out with their children.

Even after Naomi, 47, and Liev were reportedly living apart, they were still spotted together as a family.

Before their relationship, Naomi previously dated late actor Heath Ledger between August 2002 to May 2004.

Meanwhile, Liev was romantically linked to TV actress Kristin Davis in 2003, but neither has spoken about the relationship.

On Monday, Naomi and Liev issued a statement confirming their separation.

'Over the past few months we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple,' they began.
