Dave Grohl is not only a master behind a drum kit, he’s pretty skilled at the barbecue, too.
The Foo Fighters frontman has been known to roll up with his ginormous smoker and spend hours making a variety of meats for families, friends, bands, fans and also for those less fortunate.
While the Super Bowl game on Sunday between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers — which became the most-watched telecast of all-time, reaching 123.4 million viewers — was playing out and fans were fawning over the seconds Taylor Swift was on the screen, Grohl and some buddies were at The Woodlands Family Shelter in Woodland Hills serving up barbecue for the homeless.

According to nonprofit Hope the Mission, Grohl and Co. donated more than 24 hours of their time barbecuing 100 pork butts, it posted on its official Instagram page @Hopeofthevalley. They also posted several photos and videos with Grohl cooking the meat and helping plate the meals.
Grohl has donated his time behind the grill on several occasions. More recently, he spent a day on the Foo Fighters’ tour in Australia feeding the homeless in Melbourne, he’s cooked at Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission before for people displaced by Southern California winter storms and in 2018 he made sure firefighters had plenty to eat as they battled California wildfires.
In January 2020, we caught up with Grohl as he prepared 16 pork butts, 14 briskets, 40 racks of ribs and 300 chicken drumettes for the bands and fans at the 11th annual Dimebash at the Observatory in Santa Ana. The event celebrates the life and music of the late “Dimebag” Darrell Abbot from one of Grohl’s favorite bands, Pantera.
During our interview, we asked Grohl his secret to making really good barbecue.
“I don’t know, because I don’t know how to cook,” he said. “But for me, if all the elements align … temperature, the right wood, the right seasoning, the right amount of time … then you’re good. Basically, to make good barbecue you need to have patience and you have to have fun. Honestly, I think the secret to good barbecue is the vibe, so doing it somewhere like this, with all of these people, it’s going to be good.”
