A Custom ’73 Porsche 914 Rebuilt Like a Classic Lemans Racer

News  /   /  By Jim Motavalli

The standard Porsche 914 started life as the brand’s idea of an economy car. The concept was to use the VW brand for the model powered by a Volkswagen 80-horsepower flat-four. And to have the 914/6 six-cylinder with 110 horsepower proudly wear a Porsche badge.

It didn’t work out that way. All 914s are Porsches in the US.

What’s for sale on eBay Motors is the ultimate iteration of that car: a completely restored 1973 914/6 “Outlaw” GT copy with a performance upgrade. The legendary Dick Barbour Performance is offering the car on eBay with an $88,000 Buy-It-Now price.

Faster Than the Original GTs

The 914/6 is a true “Outlaw,” styled after the period GT cars.

We spoke with Dick Barbour about the build. He said the car—which started life as a regular 914, not a 914/6—is based on Porsche’s GT race cars in the period. These featured steel fender flares for bigger tires and a heated-up 911 engine (sometimes Carrera 6 power).

GT finished sixth overall in the 1970 Le Mans and successfully competed in the Targa Florio, Monte Carlo Rally, and the IMSA race series.

Dick Barbour was a very successful racer. He led a team that had three consecutive overall or class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring.

The 914/6 GT was a successful racer circa 1970. This one is a tribute to those factory cars.

With its 3.2-liter engine, the car for sale produces 270 horsepower, Barbour estimates. That’s a bit more than the original GTs, which had 230 horsepower. He says this GT clone is not a restomod.

Barbour explained:

It duplicates what the factory did back then. It was fairly successful as a racer and competed all over the world. In this form, it’s a very light car with a lot of tire on the ground. It handles fantastically and is a rocket ship.

The car was built approximately three years ago. The owner, who used the car mainly for shows, only added 5,000 miles since the build.

Barbour said:

It’s a Concours car, the product of a rotisserie rebuild.

A Complete Remake

The list of performance parts on this build is extensive:

  • A 3.2-liter block with Mahle pistons
  • DRC 993SS cams
  • Rebuilt heads
  • Megasquirt 2 fuel injection
  • Dual ignition Patrick Motorsports headers
  • GT muffler and oil cooler
  • Aeroquip lines and fittings for the oil system

The modders rebuilt the stock transmission and installed Fuchs wheels. The 914/6 was soda blasted to bare metal, and the chassis was coated with POR-15 protectant.

The builder (not Barbour, who is selling the car) re-plated all hardware in nickel and powder-coasted the trim. In addition, the car enjoyed a quality repaint in the original Phoenix Red.

There were many other upgrades, including Getty bumpers, front valence and rockers, custom lightweight seats with bolsters, Sabelt harnesses, and VDO gauges.

The original 914/6 had power from the 911T. eBay offers abundant parts for the 911. The 914 is also fully supported with parts.
