I'm more of a vinyl kind of guy, really never had much use for digital music. Sure, I've owned my share of CD/DVD players over the years but always preferred records. My longest standing player has been the Sony DVP-NS500V purchased new more than 10yrs ago. At the time, I read about the NS900 and would have loved to own it but thought the price too high for lowly digital playback so I purchased the 500 instead. Now here we are more than a decade later and all I can say is WOW. What a difference between the two players, like night and day, and the 500 is no dog here either. Saw the ad for my new player on eBay for $80 and figured how can I go wrong if it's even just as good as my 500? Just finished listening to Diana Krall "The Look Of Love" on SACD and was blown away how really good digital can sound. Just for comparison I followed that up with another of her standard redbook CD's and although not as good as SACD still a stellar performance. Will be doing a little late night burning of the candle it seems with some more music to listen to. I'm still not giving up my records, but digital music now has my respect. Just to make sure my purchase was performing on the video front I popped in a few DVD's, one was the original "Die Hard" movie. Awesome picture, and the sound was fantastic. I purchased the player more on the hopes it would be a decent CD player, not so much for it's video aspect as my music is so much more important. But it's good to know it's no slouch in this department either. As for build quality, lets just say it's built like a tank and leave it at that. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.Read full review
I have owned this model for 14 years or more. The motor assembly stopped working and Sony wants $135 for the part. So I bought a used replacement DVD player (same model) for roughly $100. No way to know how long it will last, but it works perfectly at the moment. It's very well made and has many accessories, including a jack for headphones. Amazingly, recent DVD players lack headphone jacks.
