ALLENTOWN — The Buick Heritage Alliance 50th anniversary celebration Saturday was far more than the average birthday party. Hundreds of people spilled into the newly built Bulgari display facility near Coca-Cola Park on Saturday morning to see a huge collection of vintage Buicks, from the early 1900s onward.

The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Buick Club of America, and car owners and enthusiasts came out in droves. The cars – pristine, shiny, and the obvious pride and joy of their owners – covered the grounds of the complex, owned by noted vintage car collector and billionaire jewelry magnate Nicola Bulgari. The facility is managed by Precision Motor Cars’ Keith Flickinger.

The event started on Wednesday and concluded on Saturday, and drew Buick Club members from all over the country. Although some of them brought their prized cars on trailers, others were proud of the fact that they drove their cars to Allentown from hundreds of miles away.

“There’s a certain respect among club members when you drive your car to these events,” said Jim Picard, who drove his 1957 Buick Special to the Lehigh Valley from the Detroit area. “I get 16 1/2 miles per gallon in this old beast on the highway. That’s as good as some pickup trucks these days.”

Picard’s car is painted the original colors – pale gray and white – and has all its original features, like AM radio, power steering and power brakes.

“I like driving it,” he said. “It was made to drive.”

The event was open to the public, and old-car enthusiasm and curiosity brought visitors out to stroll among the cars and hear their unique stories. One car that garnered a lot of attention was a 1940 Buick Super Estate Wagon 59, which was once owned by Bette Davis and appeared with her in the 1942 movie “Now, Voyage.”

Other cars dated from the early 1900s – Buick was founded in 1899 and is the oldest automobile brand in America – through the 1980s, and ranged from sedans to wagons, from convertibles to limousines. Colors ran the gamut, from the flashy bright colors of the 1950s to the subtler burgundy and black of earlier decades.

“I just think it’s cool to see all these old cars – they all have so much interesting history,” said Michael Benson, a car enthusiast who made the trek from Central New Jersey to Saturday’s event. “I would love to own one. Maybe someday.”

Joe Cutler, a club member who made the trip out from Douglas, Mass., said he wished he could have brought the car he’s currently restoring, a 1949 Buick Roadmaster Sedanette.

“I’ve been restoring it for the past eight years,” he said. “I’ve been involved with car collecting since I was a kid. I was 17 when I got bit by the bug.”

The Buick Heritage Alliance was formed to protect and preserve the history and heritage of Buick automobiles, and to ensure that historical Buick literature, technical manuals and documents are available to all. The organization now includes more than 35,000 original Buick documents and hundreds of artifacts.
