Robert Frank's 1955 Detroit photos to be on display at the Detroit Institute of Arts

People who make a trip to the

between March 2 and July 3 will be able to see images of Detroit circa 1955 through the lens of legendary photographer Robert Frank.

The DIA is hosting an exhibit of more than 50 rare and some never-before-seen black-and-white photographs taken by Frank as part of his travels around the U.S. in 1955 and 1956.

The photos from his trip, which he took driving in a

, were published in the 1958 book

The exhibit is titled "Detroit Experiences: Robert Frank Photographs, 1955," and will feature photos inspired by autoworkers, cars, local lunch counters, drive-in movies and public parks such as Belle Isle.

According to a

, "Frank was drawn to Detroit partly by a personal fascination with the automobile, but also saw its presence and effect on American culture as essential to his series."

There will be no additional charge for the exhibit. Regular museum admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for kids ages 6-17.
