Are Daft Punk Planning on Reuniting for Next Year’s Olympics? ‘Non’
Daft Punk will not be playing at your house, and they most certainly will not be reuniting next summer for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, Rolling Stone has confirmed.
“This is a rumor and not true,” a rep for the robots tells Rolling Stone. The twosome disbanded in 2021.
On Wednesday, Le Parisien reported (en français) that Thomas Jolly, the opening ceremony’s artistic director, had said, “It would be very fortunate if they were in the ceremony,” on the radio network France Inter. “We can’t not think of Daft Punk when we think about an international exhibition of France.” By the end of the interview, though, he fessed up: “I lied a little about Daft Punk.” Nevertheless, Le Parisien sowed more speculation, saying that an anonymous source said that the country’s most famous robot duo had met with the planning committee “several months ago.”
“Bringing Daft Punk together was obviously one of the first ideas I had,” Jolly told Le Parisien. “They are extremely talented and have a great international aura. But do they want to reform ….when they very thoughtfully announced their separation? … If they decide the day before, we will find a place for them.”
The duo announced its farewell in 2021 by releasing a video titled “Epilogue.” The last time they performed live was in 2017 with “Starboy” and “I Feel It Coming” at the Grammy Awards.
Earlier this year, the duo re-released their final album, Random Access Memories, with a number of previously unreleased bonus tracks. These included an “early take” of “Get Lucky” and the song “Touch (2021 Epilogue),” which provided the soundtrack to their “Epilogue” video. Next month, the duo will release Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), whose title is self-explanatory.
