Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consignor

Requiring little introduction, the Jaguar E-Type is one of the most iconic cars of the last 50 years.

As the iconic British sports car, the Jaguar E-Type is amongst the worlds most admired pieces of automotive styling. The 1971 addition of the glorious 5.3-litre V12 engine gave the elegant lines a further appeal, by turning it into a grand tourer. Demonstrating that a V12 engine can be made reliable, the car also offers an exceptional aftermarket service and a vast network of specialists to complement the relatively modest costs of maintenance. Of course, the styling goes a long way, but anyone with an appreciation of its technology and natural ability will not need further convincing.

This 1973 Series 3 has ~69,300 miles on the clock and was imported to the UK in 2019 from the U.S - it has been owned by the current owner Ian since then, during which time Ian has strived to make the car a very driveable and mechanically sound example, with over £20k in invoices over the last few years.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Tim (garage owner entrusted by Ian), and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I had always wanted an E-Type and when I found this one in need of some paintwork, but otherwise mechanically sound, well it made the perfect project car for me.

Circa 2019 Ian and his wife Rachel were looking for a project car and, having settled on an E-Type Jaguar, were in the market for the right car - something mechanically sound but cosmetically in need of a little TLC.

Finding their future car in the form of a recently imported Series 3 coupe registered in ‘73, Ian and Rachel fell in love immediately. Having carried out light work to the car in their ~4 years of ownership, they have had the car repainted although no major repairs were required to the bodywork, as well as reupholstering of the two front seats and general mechanical tweaks and maintenance.

Sadly after suffering some recent health issues, Ian is now no longer able to drive the car and is now looking to find his E-Type a new home.

Exterior

The iconic body shape of the Jaguar E-Type is arguably one of the most beautiful ever designed.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire spoke wheels of the Jaguar E-Type are in good condition as you can see in the images and videos.

The wheels are fitted with Nexen tyres that are DOT marked 2019 and appear to have plenty of tread left across the board.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the E-Type is in good condition too.

There is very slight spot of surface corrosion on the lip of the bonnet, however this does not look to be serious and the bodywork is otherwise free of any major imperfections.

Please take a look at the images to see / assess the underside of the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Ian had the car repainted in the early stages of his ownership and is in very nice condition, with no major scratches, scrapes, or other such damage visible on the vehicle.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paint and bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in great condition around the car, with no visible stone chips, cracks, or damage to any of the panes across the vehicle.

The chromework is in equally good condition, with only the slightest signs of pitting visible under close inspection.

Interior

The interior of the Jaguar E-Type delivers a sense of occasion for both driver and passenger, with the well placed seating position leaving you with a view of the lustrously long bonnet housing the formidable V12 engine.

Seats and Carpets

The front two seats have been reupholstered, leaving them looking and feeling brand new - the perforated leather sitting comfortably in the luxurious cabin of the E-Type. The rear bench has not been reupholstered and does suffer from some wear and tear, as well as a rip to the hide on the drivers side.

Along with the front two seats, the carpets were replaced in the cabin and they are in excellent condition, along with the roof lining too.

Dashboard

The dashboard is original and has not been touched to the extent of Ian’s knowledge, however it is free from any obvious damage and is not cracked or split.

All appropriate switchgear is present and correct too and all dials appear to be in fully working order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is beginning to show its age, with the leather having developed an age appropriate patina but it is otherwise undamaged.

The automatic gear selector is in good condition, with no damage and smooth operation across the range.

Mechanics

With smooth V12 power delivery, a throaty burble under acceleration, and plenty of grunt to keep up with the traffic, the Jaguar E-Type is a formidable Grand Tourer.

Engine and Gearbox

The V12 engine in the Jaguar E-Type is a very well engineered powerplant, providing smooth power delivery throughout the rev range.

During our visit the car started without issue during our ‘Cold Start’ video, and performed well during the ‘On The Road’ video too.

Likewise the automatic gearbox performed very well during our ‘On The Road’ segment, changing gears without issue and making no untoward noises in the process.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension on the E-Type is very comfortable, offering plenty of dampening whilst still retaining a reasonable level of handling performance under load.

We noticed no issues with the handling of the car on the day.

Likewise the brakes seem to be in good condition, with no sign of them losing efficiency throughout our journey and no squealing or grinding either.

The Drive

The E-Type provides a driving experience unlike any other, with the V12 engine delivering constant and easily accessible power, the low down seating position and poised handling of the car truly combine to create a formidable experience.

Electrics and Other

The electrics all worked as expected on the day of our visit, with no noticeable faults. Ian has spent a lot of money recently, as you can see in the paperwork section, covering items such as electronics.

All external lights were in fully working order as well as all switchgear on the dashboard too.

History and Paperwork

This Jaguar E-Type comes to market with a good amount of recent paperwork detailing a lot of work totalling around £20k.

With a solid history of maintenance since importation, this 1973 Jaguar E-Type comes to market as a well presented and drivers' example, having had a lot of money spent in recent years.

Coming fresh from a four year ownership with current owner Ian, no expense has been spared in keeping the car roadworthy and well presented throughout.

The car is current stored at Willow Triumph Ltd, the garage in Darlington that Ian has used over recent years, as per the paperwork.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Ian ,I really must complement you on the work you have done on the car to date – it’s stunning !
If you were planning to keep the car – what would be the next area of work you would initiate with the ongoing preservation of the car?
John
