Woody Harrelson shares Matthew McConaughey's suspicion they might be secret brothers

Are Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson brothers?

It's a question the "True Detective" stars – and McConaughey's mom – have apparently wondered.

“Where I start and where he ends and where he starts and I end has always been like a murky line,” McConaughey, 53, told Kelly Ripa of his tight friendship with Harrelson, 61, while appearing on her podcast "Let's Talk Off Camera" on April 12.

“And that’s part of our bromance, right? My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew," he added. "My family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him."

Could there be a deeper reason for the resemblance? Well, McConaughey teased that his mother and Harrelson's father weren't exactly strangers back in Texas.

Matthew McConaughey (Rust Cohle) and Woody Harrelson (Martin Hart) star in an eight-episode HBO crime series, "True Detective," set in Louisiana.

"In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families," the actor told Ripa. "And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad’ … Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W."

He continued: "Well, we went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that his dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce. Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering or a meeting or a ‘knew’ moment.”

Harrelson confirmed the story during his April 18 appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."

"There is some veracity to that thought," Harrelson said, adding that, nine months before McConaughey's birth, the "The Dallas Buyers Club" actor's mother "was on a sabbatical from her relationship with his supposed father Jim."

Harrelson also explained McConaughey's hesitance toward getting a DNA test to confirm if they are brothers. "For him, it's a much more big deal," he said. "He feels like he's losing a father, but I'm like, no you're gaining a different father and a brother."

When Ripa asked if McConaughey and Harrelson have considered getting DNA tests to see if they're related, McConaughey said they've been "on the precipice" of getting one, but he's hesitated since he has more "skin in the game" over the results than Harrelson does.

“It's a little easier for (Harrelson) to say, 'Come on, let's do it!,' because what's the skin in it for him?" he said. "It's a little harder for me, because he's asking me to take a chance and go 'Wait a minute. You're telling me that my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing it?' I've got a little more skin in the game."
