If kids are always crawling all over you, there’s a scientific reason for that. New research suggests that children are more drawn to people they perceive as attractive.

A study published by Frontiers in Psychology found that children also relate trustworthiness to whether they perceive someone as pretty — or pretty ugly.

In the study, 138 children between ages of 8 and 12 were shown 200 neutral male faces and asked to rate them on dependability. In a second session, they were asked to judge their attractiveness. Surprise, surprise — researchers found those ranked more attractive were also perceived as more trustworthy.

But let’s be honest — adults do it too. There has been a heap of studies supporting a “beauty stereotype,” which is loosely translated to mean that if you’re hot, you win at life because people assume you’re a smarter and more successful human being.

Now this research suggests that like grownups, children see a person’s looks as an indication of their character.

Beauty is only skin deep. We’ll just keep repeating that to ourselves, shall we?
