Letter from the PrincipalDear Alumni and Friends,With the snow having melted and the buds beginningto sprout, spring will soon be on its way bringingnew life. All too soon, as well, another classwill graduate and become part of our esteemedalums.This year has been very busy. Our new gym is gettinga lot of use when we gather as a school communityfor Masses, assemblies and basketballgames. We have also hosted alumni reunions, teammeetings and dinners, teacher luncheons andretreats in Dominican Hall. As soon as we receivethe money we will also be able to finish and furnishthe music rooms, guidance and career center, andwrestling room. We are hoping that we will be ablecomplete this area soon!If you have not had a chance to stop by your CookeRoad roots, we invite you to do so! AlumniSpotlightChuck Egelhoff ’61On January 15th at the <strong>Bishop</strong><strong>Watterson</strong> Boys’ Basketballgame against <strong>Bishop</strong> Hartley,Chuck Egelhoff was surprisedwhen family, current and formercoaches, clergy, and currentand former administratorshonored him for his 32 years ofservice to the school.Chuck began volunteering forthe basketball program byrunning the clock and keepingthe book while a freshman atOSU. In 1962 Chuck met hisfuture wife, Norma, who wasthen a cheerleader at <strong>Bishop</strong><strong>Watterson</strong>. Four years laterthey were married. Chuck andNorma have three sons, Scott’84 (Karen), Jeff ’88 (GingerSpangler ’89) and David ’97(Kelsey Dunning ’97). Chuckand Norma are members ofthe 1998 <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Watterson</strong>Alumni Hall of Fame and 1999Homecoming Hall of Fame.While at <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Watterson</strong>,Chuck pitched a no-hitteragainst St. Charles at their fieldin 1961 to win the CCL. Hepitched and won all eightleague games that year and hewas a four-year letter winner.Chuck was also on the basketballteam and the undefeated1960 football team.Former basketball coach MikeWinters said, “Chuck wasalways so professional in hisduties and exemplified the valuesof volunteerism and sportsmanship.Because of the greatjob he does, he is really wellknown and respected in theleague.” Winters and formercoaches Frank Truitt and KevinAlkire were present along withcurrent coaches VinceLombardo, Tom Woodford,Bob Dunning, Jim Ryan, SteveDevlin, Bill Bope, AdamTeeters and Casey Teeters.Principal Marian Hutson presentedChuck with a letterjacket for his years of service.Chuck keeping scoreDespite the honor, Chuck stillhas a number of years to continuehis expertise. <strong>Eagle</strong> SportsSpotlightMen’s AlumniBasketballTournamentThe 18th Annual Ron ShayMen’s Alumni BasketballTournament was held in<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Watterson</strong>’s new gymon Dec. 26 and Dec. 27, 2009.Nearly 110 alumni returned totheir alma mater to participatein this annual event namedin honor of Ron Shay, tournamentfounder and longtime<strong>Eagle</strong> teacher, coach andadministrator.The eighteen teams were dividedinto three divisions, and thewinners of each division wereas follows:Division IClass of 2003Division IIClass of 1991 through 1995combinedDivision III Co-ChampsClass of 1978 and 1979combinedClasses of 1958 through1973 combinedThe Division 3 combinedteams were declared co-champsas their final game ended in atie and overtime was more thanthey were willing to undertakeafter a hard day of hoops.Again this year, the oldestalumni participant was 1960graduate and basketball starOrv Lyons. Orv played twogames while helping his teammatesto a Division 3 co-championship.The only other alumfrom the 1960’s was GeorgeGoodburn ’69, who also playedboth games.Many thanks go to Jeff Soiu’68, Chris Beale ’70, and JessicaHill ’01, Alumni AssociationPresident, and Joe Hill ’63,Alumni Director, for all oftheir hard work in putting thisevent together. <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Watterson</strong> FamilyOn December 1, Martin<strong>Watterson</strong>, his wife Barbara,and their son, Robert, visited<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Watterson</strong> High Schoolto see the artifacts belonging to<strong>Bishop</strong> John Ambrose<strong>Watterson</strong> that are displayed inthe new South Addition.Martin, the great-nephew of<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Watterson</strong>, donated theitems to the school.While taking a tour of thebuilding, the <strong>Watterson</strong>s visitedseveral classrooms and spoke tothe students about the man forwhom the school is named. “Itis important for our students toknow their heritage and realizethat <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Watterson</strong> was areal person, not just a name onthe building,” commentedPrincipal Marian Hutson.The artifacts include theDoctor of Sacred Theologydiploma the <strong>Bishop</strong> earned atGeorgetown in 1878, a birettahe wore after being consecrateda bishop, and a hand-carvedrosary that the family believesis made from olive wood fromthe Holy Land. The familyalso donated a scrapbook thatMartin’s grandfather madewhen his brother died. It containsthe <strong>Bishop</strong>’s obituaries,lists of dignitaries who attendedhis funeral, eulogies, and thelike. On this visit, the<strong>Watterson</strong>s donated a horsehairclothing brush used by<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Watterson</strong>. FatherWatson has served as AssociatePastor at Holy Spirit and St.Andrew, and chaplain at<strong>Bishop</strong> Hartley and <strong>Bishop</strong><strong>Watterson</strong> High Schools.Before becoming the pastor ofSt. Andrew in 2000 he was thepastor of St. Mary in GermanVillage. Fr. Watson was recentlyrecognized for his lastingimpact on the school andparish at St. Mary.While at St. Andrew Fr.Watson has helped to retire theparish debt as well as to acquireand renovate what is nowknown as the Bryce EckActivity Center. He currentlyserves on the CatholicFoundation Board, the AlumniBoard of Theological College,and is Dean of the NorthwestDeanery. He regularly gives theinvocation for the Agonis Club,the Quarterback Club, theOhio High School BaseballCoaches Association, and theColumbus City Council.Bill McGarity ’72has been named the 2009Administrator of the Year bythe Ohio Department ofNatural Resources (ODNR)Division of Watercraft. HeBill McGarityserves as deputy chief of theDivision of Watercraft, whichis headquartered at ODNR’sFountain Square complex at2045 Morse Road inColumbus.Bill joined ODNR in 1983 asan administrative assistant inthe former CivilianConservation Corps where helater served as a field operationsmanager. He transferredto the Division of Watercraft in1997 as human resources manager.Promoted to the positionof Deputy Chief in 2002, Billcurrently oversees the ScenicRivers Program and theHuman Resources, Registrationand Titling, and ResourcePlanning sections.Bill is a graduate of The OhioState University where hereceived a Bachelor of Sciencedegree in Agriculture. Bill andhis wife Michelle, also a ’72grad, live in Worthington andhave three sons: Patrick ’00,Sean ’03, and Kevin who graduatedfrom ThomasWorthington High School in’05.
