C for DTMDTM is the German abbreviation for the German Touring Car Masters. Three letterswhich stand for the ultimate in performance. And for a success story that is unparalleledin motorsport – that of the C-Class. It was in 1988 that Mercedes-Benz first enteredthe DTM, four years young at the time, together with the motorsport experts from AMG.Lining up at the start was a 190 E 2.5-16 model, a racing version of the famous precursorto the C-Class. Mercedes promptly took this car to second place in the DTM.One success followed another: runner-up again in 1991 and 1993, DTM champion in1992 and 1994 with the first true C-Class. A furious finale in Shanghai in November2010 marked the end of the most successful DTM season to date for Mercedes-Benzand AMG. The C-Class finished first in nine of eleven races, giving Paul Di Resta the2010 DTM championship ahead of Gary Paffett and Bruno Spengler, also drivingAMG Mercedes C-Class models. So, it’s definitely C for DTM. And C for champion.

Because, as theinventor of the car, Mercedes-Benz has a special responsibility– one we have undertaken with all our mightfor many years. Since the end of 2010, we have beenable to offer you over 85 Mercedes-Benz models withBlueEFFICIENCY technologies, all of which place farless of a burden on the environment – without havingto compromise on safety, comfort and driving enjoyment.Our BlueEFFICIENCY concept comprises innovationsfor efficient mobility as well as optimised processes allthe way along the value chain. They involve differentapproaches, but they all have a common goal: to makeyour individual mobility as sustainable as possible.The BlueFFFICIENCY measures – the Mercedes-Benzefficiency package. It consists of comprehensive vehicleoptimisations which save fuel and ease the burden onthe environment. Each model combines the most efficientengine with optimal aerodynamic and energy-managementmeasures of the latest generation, to minimisefuel consumption. Such measures include intelligentlycontrolled ancillaries, tyres with optimised rollingresistance, lightweight components and the ECO start/stop function, which is available in more and moremodels. New BlueDIRECT V6 or V8 petrol engines inmany model series from the C-Class to the S-Class reduceconsumption by up to 24% yet have a much higherpower output.BlueTEC – the clean diesel. Mercedes-Benz has broughtto market BlueTEC technology for diesel engines basedon common-rail direct injection (CDI). A modular emission-controlsystem makes BlueTEC an exceptionallyclean diesel tech nology. Not only does it remove up to95% of the particulate from the exhaust gases, it alsoreduces nitrogen oxides by up to 90%. All that remainsis water, harmless nitrogen and the satisfying feelingof habing helped to ease the burden on the environment.HYBRID – the intelligent combination of petrol andelectric drive. A well-established team makes a lot ofthings easier. And this is certainly true in the case ofHYBRID technology. This involves the electric motorbeing used for recuperating braking energy which isstored in the battery. When needed, this energy isforwarded to the electric drive, which assists the petrolengine when the car is accelerating. What’s more, theECU shuts off the petrol engine when the speed fallsbelow 15 km/h. In this way, a HYBRID can reduce fuelconsumption by up to 20%. So it looks after the environmentas well as your bank balance. Perfect teamwork,you might say.The BlueEFFICIENCY measures bring about a substantial reduction in fuelconsumption and CO 2 emissions

It marries the benefits of HYBRID technologywith those of BlueTEC technology: the kinetic energy isconverted into electrical energy, which can be re-usedwhen required. At the same time, the BlueTEC technologycleans the exhaust gases and removes most ofthe pollutants.Innovative drive systems that break new ground: E-CELLand F-CELL. Mercedes-Benz has developed two locallyemission-free drive configurations in the form of theE-CELL and F-CELL. The B-Class F-CELL has alreadyentered small-series production and since mid-2010 ithas been proving its suitability for everyday use onGermany’s roads. It uses hydrogen to produce power ina fuel cell for the electric motor. Since the end of 2010,the first small-series A-Class E-CELL vehicles havebeen rolling off the production line. They have an electricmotor which takes its energy from two lithium-ionbatteries, achieving a range of over 200 km. In the caseof the E-CELL PLUS, in future a small internal combustionengine (Range Extender) will support the electricvehicle in order to increase this distance.But that is not all: under the banner “Design for Environment”,we also look at a vehicle’s entire lifecycle –from planning to recycling. The same applies to thebuilding and running of new factories. In addition, weare involved in the development of alternative fuelsand carry out research in the field of bionics. The powerful and quiet enginesimpress with their low emission and fuel-consumption figures.4-cylinder in-line engines. The 4-cylinder diesel unitwith a choice of four power outputs displays a high levelof sophistication: it offers impressively rich torque andinstantaneous response, even at low revs. What’s more,the diesel engines consume less fuel, have low emissionsand are both quiet and powerful.This is made possible by a wealth of innovative techno-logies. Fourth-generation common-rail diesel technologyimpresses by virtue of an injection pressure increasedto 2000 bar, optimised combustion chambers andextremely precise injectors. Higher ignition pressureand the turbocharger make for high torque in everyengine speed range, while the requisite refinement comescourtesy of two Lanchester balancer shafts. Optimisedalternator management ensures consistent use of theengine’s coasting phases, thus allowing recuperationof kinetic energy. Meanwhile the radiator shutterreduces the aerodynamic drag when the engines requireonly moderate cooling. The consumptionoptimisedV6 diesel engine develops 170 kW (expectedto be available from the end of the 2 nd quarter of 2011),making it the most powerful diesel drive system withcommon-rail technology in the new C-Class. Precise andfast injectors, a high injection pressure of up to 1600 bar,and an optimised turbocharger combine to produce animmense peak torque of 540 Nm – all of which adds upto effortlessly superior pulling power in all drivingsituations. New technologies reduce fuel consumption, while CO 2 emissions are lower than ever fora Mercedes-Benz C-Class.4-cylinder in-line engines. The optimised 4-cylinderpowerplant with a displacement of 1.8 litres, directpetrol injection, variable valve timing and turbochargeroffers outstanding torque and power, not to mentionappropriately low fuel consumption and emissions.Fuel is used more efficiently thanks to almost completecombustion, while the variable valve timing allowsoptimum cylinder charging and, therefore, reduces fuelconsumption. Fuel consumption is also cut thanks to thereduced weight and low internal friction. Two balancershafts ensure low engine vibration in every engine speedrange.The 4-cylinder petrol engines come with a choice ofthree power outputs:– C 180 BlueEFFICIENCY developing 115 kW anda peak torque of 250 Nm– C 200 BlueEFFICIENCY developing 135 kW anda peak torque of 270 Nm– C 250 BlueEFFICIENCY developing 150 kW anda peak torque of 310 NmAll engines are exceptionally quiet and meet stringentfuel consumption and emission requirements (Euro 5).V6 engine. Over 20% lower fuel consumption than thepredecessor model and correspondingly lower CO 2emissions yet enhanced dynamics – a neat way of summingup the new C 350 BlueEFFICIENCY. These advantagesare primarily down to the latest-generation directpetrol injection from Mercedes-Benz, which operatesusing spray-guided combustion and high-pressure injectionby means of piezo injectors. Maximum output is225 kW, while the peak torque of 370 Nm is availablebetween 3500 and 5250 rpm. In addition to the modifiedcombustion process, further factors which help toreduce fuel consumption include the standard-fitECO start/stop function, a completely new air andexhaust system, controlled ancillaries, intelligentalternator management and consistently applied

Plus they are intuitive and ergonomic to use.6-speed manual transmission. The 4-cylinder engines(with the exception of the C 250 BlueEFFICIENCY andmodels with 4MATIC all-wheel drive) are paired witha 6-speed manual transmission with ECO start/stopfunction as standard, offering impressively short, preciseshift travel as well as optimum tuning of the enginepower, gear ratios and rear axle ratio. A display on theinstrument cluster indicates recommended gear changesto further encourage a highly economical driving style.7G-TRONIC PLUS. All V6 engines as well as modelswith 4MATIC all-wheel drive (with the exception ofthe C 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY and C 300 CDI4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY) are paired with the efficiency-optimised7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatictransmission as standard. This transmission is availableas an optional extra for 4-cylinder models (standard forC 250 BlueEFFICIENCY). The revised 7G-TRONIC PLUSsetup includes a new torque converter generationwhich ensures more dynamic response, greater durability,reduced noise levels and significantly lower fuelconsumption. The latter is also thanks to the inclusionas standard of the ECO start/stop function, which stopsthe engine temporarily when the car is stopped attraffic lights or in a traffic jam. Furthermore, the sevenforward gears in the 7G-TRONIC PLUS ensure an ideallyadapted engine speed at all times, short shift times andsmooth shifts. Driving enjoyment is likewise enhanced:the car delivers even better acceleration and provideseven more pulling power. And when changing down,gears can be skipped for fast in-gear acceleration.

Take-back of end-of-life vehicles. Coming full circle. At the end of its long life, you can return your C-Class to us for environment-friendlydisposal in accordance with the EU End-Of-Life Vehicle Directive 1 . But that day lies a long way off.1 Applies in accordance with national regulations to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight. Mercedes-Benz passenger cars have met the statutory regulations governingthe suitability of their design for reuse and recycling for a number of years now. A network of vehicle take-back depots and dismantlers has been established which willprocess your vehicle in an environment-friendly manner.
