June 2016 Issue No 51
Chris Hallworth's V12 Coupe

Ok, there is a lot to get through this month, and this bit is very important.
Firstly, Car Registrations, Number Plates and member numbers.
As you all know, we like to try to keep things simple. Your member number is your car's
registration plate number/license plate number, the thing that sometimes gets stuck on the front
and the back of your car. Now we negotiate discounts on your behalf, and most of the suppliers
require you to give your member number to get that discount. Our sponsored suppliers get a
truncated version of the member list, which just gives your member number and name and is
used for discount purposes only. So...if you change your car's registration number, please let us
know so we can alter our records. This also forms part of your membership agreement with us,
so please tell us.
This nicely leads me on to a more serious note, as if the above wasn't serious enough. We are
starting to get several emails bounced back to us as no longer existing. Now those ones in the
UK we can contact if we have phone number. Yes, IF we have a phone number. There are
several members who have not bothered to give us a phone number, so we have no other
means of contact. This also applies to our international members who we can't contact. These
are the larger group of emails that are getting bounced back. To be perfectly honest, calling our
international members is very expensive, and I simply do not have to time to contact people
who haven't updated us with their contact details. We can only hope that sooner or later we will
get an email from them saying that they haven't heard from us in ages, what is happening? Yes
it does happen. Please, if you change your email address, car registration details or simply sold
your car PLEASE let us know.
Finally, I have said this before, we DO NOT organise any events except the Jaguars at the
Castle/XJS Club National Day, and cannot enter you into events that the Club has a stand at.
We do let you know the booking details by several means and it is up to you to book.
More ramblings next month
Donington Historic Festival 30th April 2nd May 2016
This was our Fourth annual Historic Festival held at this superb racing venue, and we are
pleased to have supported it all along. To me, the venue has always been a lot more friendly that
Silverstone or other race tracks we have been to, it's a lot cheaper to show your cars as well.
Every year our stand has been placed on the start/finishing straight, and we are gradually
moving along the track. This year, our stand was placed in the best area ever, right next to the
Esses chicane where spills and thrills are guaranteed, (Note to Festival Staff please put us
here again next year) The only thing that spoilt the whole weekend was the w.eather, and I
suspect that it put a lot of people off and they stayed at home where it was probably a lot
warmer.
The whole weekend is totally devoted to Classic Car Racing, and these guys don't mess around
either. Every race is highly competative with cars that must be worth thousands of pounds being
thrashed around the wonderful circuit in very close competition. There is certainly no holding
back and the spectacle of every race far outshone the now rather boring F1 racing. I mean, in F1
the usual thing is once someone gets pole position, they win, or come second. The thrills of this
has gone now, dissapearing in a foggy cloud of Health and Safety regulations and very silly F1
"improvements". Yeah right! At Donington, its racing as it should be, with races between prewar
sports cars right through F3 to pretty modern saloon car racing. Monday seeing the Jaguar races
of differing classes, qualifying for the finals later on in the afternoon. For me though, the best
racing was the pre 70's saloon cars, which had Lotus Cortina's in their droves battling against
the likes of American Mustangs, Alfa Romeo's and even Austin A35/40's, Morris 1000's and
Hillman Imp's. To see the Lotus Cortina's blasting their way through the Esses with fractions of
an inch seperating them was fantastic.
Sadly though, the Great British Summer (what's that I hear you ask) played it's part with sunny
but cold, through freezing with snow and gales to torrential rain and gust's upto 60 mph, which
put paid to one buttie tent on the Sunday, collapsing under the extreme force of the wind as it
was being erected.
The general turnout was down on previous years as well, but over the three days we managed a
healthy number of cars on our stand and we sent at least two cars on the dinner time parade
laps on each of the days.
Once again, a fantastic weekend, slightly spoilt by the weather but enjoyed by all.
Thanks to Daz Johnson and Michael Gliddon for providing a number of pictures.
A tricky one for you this time as the last couple have been so easy. This is the first of
any owner member is free to attend
Richard Holtby has written in to say...
Pre HE XJS Restoration
I just thought I would let you know of a fairly rare Prehe XJS I am just setting about restoring. It
was first registered on 300379 and was one of a very small run of trial colours for development
and is in factory black. JDHT cannot be precise about how many were painted black and when
pushed say only a "handful!"
She has lain in a dry garage since 1993 when the previous owner died, I got her on Sunday.
She had a TWR style kit and Fondmetal alloys fitted sometime in the 80's I guess the kit is now
off and she runs and drives.
I am about to start work on this as a restoration project and I will write some articles for the
magazine. Needs a lot of structural welding cills, floors jacking points but well worth it in my
opinion for such a rare car. She has only covered 62k and already looks better with the kit taken
off. The last 6 on the vin is 101820
Pre Production XJS found in Australia
Dean How has been in touch asking for help in tracing this XJS he has come to own. We have
helped him find out some more details from Jaguar Heritage, but there is still a lot of information
missing. Dean writes, "I'm trying to find the history of a unique XJS that got passed down to me
when my father (Bob How) died eight years ago.
This car is very unusual with an interior shape that is NOT normal XJS like, and the bumpers
are also a shape that I have never seen, it has “XKF” on the boot lid and all the windows in the
car (less the windscreen) are dated 1972. The chassis number is 2JB 27D 001002L".
Jaguar Heritage have discovered that the number 2JB 27D 001002 was used on XJS prototype
XJ27/7 which was used by Jim Randle for V12 petrol injection development. It was acquired on
15/10/1973 and sold in January 1978. Between February 1975 and March 1976 it was used for
axle tests and by April 1977 it was no longer representative of present specification and required
replacing. It was still under the control of Jim Randle in November 1977.
The car was a LHD V12 with manual transmission. It was signal red and registered GKV 638N.
Dean says that the car is now blue, as in the picture and he believes his Father converted the
car to RHD not long after it was imported to Austalia.
As the Club is based around the social side of things car shows and events, it's
vitally important that entering instructions are read and fully understood and
several of them differ from just sending in an entry form. Whichever way is
required, please mark your entry form "XJS CLUB" or you might be parked in a far
distant part of the site. So to avoid any confusion, please follow the instructions
provided.
Please email Graham Greenwood for details of all Club events:
Guidance Note for ALL events 2015
Shows and Events
Unless otherwise notified, ALL events must be prebooked with entry fees being paid, where
applicable, to event organisers, NOT US.
Only where it is specifically stated as " just turn up" events is there no need to prebook.
The XJS Club do NOT organise any events in whole and therefore please do not send or ask for
booking forms/fees unless otherwise stated.
When travelling to an event, please allow yourself plenty of time to get there. The earlier you get
there the better as quite often there are large queues to get into the event. Opening times are
usually given with each event, but as a rule of thumb, any time between 08.00 and 09.00 is an
ideal time to arrive. ALL events are governed by H&S rules that usually oversee the arrival,
movement and departure times of exhibitors and these are usually rigidly enforced (except for an
emergency).
Growler Parts is a web based Jaguar parts business set up by me Kevan Hughes in
April 2009.
I have had a lifelong love of the Jaguar Marque and personally owned many Jaguars
over the years which is how my business started!
For every Jaguar that I have owned I couldn’t resist buying parts for it that I didn’t
necessarily need, but thought “that may come in handy one day!” As I sold each Jaguar I kept
my stock of parts leaving me with parts for Jaguars that I nolonger owned, so I decided to set
up a website selling my no longer needed Jaguar parts as a hobby!
As time went on and interest grew in my then ‘one page website’ I met contacts in the
Jaguar Dealership world that were willing to sell me their ‘surplus stock’ at a discounted price
that I could then pass on to my customers at an equally discounted price and the rest as they
say is history!
If you checkout my website www.growlerparts.com you will see that 95% of my parts are
new, genuine Jaguar parts at prices up to 60% cheaper than any Jaguar Main Dealership.
So please take time to have a look at my website as Club Members get a 20% discount of all
parts ordered – can’t be bad!!
I have also just started a Facebook page so please feel free to dropin and have a look at
www.facebook.com/GrowlerJaguar
Best Wishes
Fat Lamb, when they hosted their Winter Challenge Tour, featured in the March 2016 issue.
Owned and operated for the past 30 years by Paul Bonsall a self confessed car nut and proud
owner of an Austin Healey 3000 and Mk11 Jaguar the Fat Lamb is dedicated to providing the
perfect venue for small touring groups of car enthusiasts, both classic and modern. Situated in
magnificent countryside between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, the hotel also has easy
access to the Scottish borders, Northumberland and the High Pennines of Weardale and
Teasdale.
Here can be found some of
the finest driving roads in the
country inviting ribbons of
tarmac which stretch out into
the far distance, open roads
with long sweeping bends
and little or no traffic. This is
a favourite area for Paul,
who is never happier than
when he is out of the office
in his Healey devising new
routes for classic car club
rallies and events.
Page 42

ADVERT
The Fat Lamb are offering individual car club members a discount of 10% off their standard
rates, or 20% for four cars or more just for the pleasure of having nice cars on their car park.
So if you are planning a touring holiday just for yourselves or with a few friends you can benefit
from the above by simply quoting the name of your club
But that's not all. The team at The Fat Lamb can take the pain out of organising your clubs next
touring event. They provide the complete package, with tailormade tours from 50 to 250 miles
taking in some of our finest moorland roads, country lanes and picturesque villages. Tour notes
can be supplied as tulip books or with full descriptive instructions, and can incorporate tea/coffee
and lunch stops, and visits to local attractions such as The Lakeland Motor Museum, The
National Steam Railway Collection at Shildon or Beamish Open Air Museum. They can arrange
dedicated parking for your cars and include trips on Steam Railways, a sail on a Lake Streamer
or a canal barge, with a return to your cars aboard a classic split cab coach or double decker
bus. In addition, they can supply rally plates and arrange evening entertainment if required.
Paul will happily come out with you to ensure things run smoothly, or drive ahead and create a
photographic record of your cars on the tour, and in the unlikely event of minor mechanical
issues, he has a fully equipped workshop complete with four post lift to effect a repair. For those
who prefer to make their own arrangements tour organisers are offered a free nights
accommodation in order to suss out the area (and the Inn), with advice on routes, visits etc.
Their other passion, the Hotel itself, has acquired a good reputation for the warm friendly
welcome, comfortable accommodation and, of course, their food all freshly prepared on the
premises by their own team of chefs. There are twelve ensuite bedrooms with a combination of
doubles, twins and family rooms and overflow accommodation can be arranged locally if
demand outstrips supply, with all meals taken together in the restaurant which can seat up to
sixty if required. Group discounts are available for clubs taking nine rooms or above, with prices
starting from as little as £50.00 per person per night for a dinner, bed and breakfast package.
Really nice condition inside and out. Way way better than your average. Drives very nicely, no
knocks or bangs, pulls smoothly. Ice blue with Regatta blue trim. Bodywork in very nice shape.
Very solid AJ16 engine, same as the x300. Original and unmolested. Great service history with
many receipts for parts replaced including a new aircon compressor and many new suspension
parts. 4 brand new tyres were put on last year, hardly any miles done since, diamond cut wheels
mint. (option to have a set of 5 spoke xj40 wheels as well if you wish I used these for winter
storage) Recently waxoiled (by me) and cavity waxed. Although of course you can never have
too much of this! Everything on the car works. Doesn’t lose oil or put out blue smoke. 125,000
miles. Car really wants for nothing. Selling as I need to downsize as I am losing garage space
and sadly I have no room at my house for another. chrisbaker_7@hotmail.com £8500 ono.
A very rare, superb, 2007 2.7L Twin Turbo Diesel SType, with built in Satellite Navigation and
18" Mercury Alloy Wheels, shod with Avon tyres with loads of tread left!
This car is rare because it is one of the very few supplied with a High Luxury ivory leather
Jaguar, the car has a full service history. With front, and rear, parking sensors, electric foldback
door mirrors, having the benefit of split folding rear seats, and finished in Radiance Metallic
Clear Coat paint, this is an exceptional SType.
opportunity to buy a Jaguar XF at a price I cannot refuse!)
Rare manual 1989 3.6 XJS
with factory fitted sunroof. Unfortunately the bodywork and undercarriage has degraded too
much for me to consider restoring which is a pity because the car is mechanically sound. Had a
new sub frame fitted two years ago and has been used regularly up until about 6 months ago
and has since been stored in a garage. Has done 127000 miles and does start and run
although there's a suspected leak in the petrol tank. Currently SORN with out MOT
Gear box, clutch and engine are all in working order and selling either as a project for someone
with more time and expertise than me or as spares and repairs. Any interest or for further
...and finally,
We fully welcome on board the David Manners Group into the XJS Club groups of Sponsors
and I'm sure that if you have done business with them, or even with any of our sponsors you
have been satisfied with their customer service. David Manners have said that certain items will
attract a good discount, but you will need to quote your member number to them to get this.
Please make sure we have the correct number, as mentioned in the Ramblings section.
We are also intersted in any events you organise, go to or even know of as we are always ready
to spread our wings further afield to meet more of our members who are based away from our
central region. We would also like to hear from members who would like to form a region, it's not
that hard and can be exceptionally rewarding. Please let us know if you are interessted in any of
these things.
There will be another bit of rambling next month so until then...
Happy Motoring !!
Carol, Chris, Mick, Graham and Martin
Very well done if you got this one right. This is the Fletcher Ogle GT from 1966. One of four
cars built by Norman Fletcher of Fletcher Powerboats. This was a development of the
lightweight Ogle SX1000 and was based on a Mini Cooper running gear with a 1293cc engine,
tuned by Harry Ratcliffe of the British Vita Racing Team.
The car was raced and driven by John Handley (Works Mini Cooper and British Touring Car
Champion). The car was very successful and at Nurburgring set the fastest lap by any British
car in September 1966
