JERVIS R. HARBECK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T0 DETROIT CAN COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORIPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY.
POURING-SPOUT FOR PAPER OR FIBROUS-MATERIAL CANS OR RECEPTACLES.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 9, 1914.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JERvIs R. HAEBECE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pouring Spouts for Paper or Fibrous-Material Cans or Receptaeles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pouring spouts for paper or fibrous material cans or receptacles.
The object of my invention is to provide a paper or fibrous material can or receptacle with an opening and closing pouring spout of a simple, efficient and durable construction, adapted to be rapidly and cheaply manufactured, and which will form a tight closure with the spout opening in the wall of the receptacle to which it is applied.
My invention consists in the means I einploy to practically accomplish this obJect or result, asherein shown and described, and more particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan` view of a pouring spout paper can or receptacle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail, perspective view showing the spout open and in position for pouring, and Fig. 4 is a detail cross section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, 1 represents a paper or fibrous material can 0r receptacle having the customary body 2, bottom head 3 and cover 4f and made of any suitable fibrous material, designated herein as paper for a generic term. In one wall of the recept-acle, preferably the cover wall, I provide a spout openin 5, the side edges 6 of which are preferably converging from the hinged end of the spout 7 toward the free or swingingy end thereof. The receptacle Wall at the wider end of the spout opening is provided with an integral hinge flap or member 8, preferably having a score 9 at its base on the inside of the receptacle Wall to facilitate the turning of this ila without danger of breaking, and with a sit 10 to receive the hinge tang or tongue 11 of the spout 7 The spout 7 has a flat to portion 13 and a pair of quadrant shapeld side wings 14, each preferably furnished with an integral stop 15 at the free end thereof to limit the opening movement of the spout. The spout is also furnished at the free end of its top wall with an integral lip or finger piece 16 which overlaps the receptacle wall when the spout is closed and limits the inward or closing movement of the spout. The top Wall 13 of the spout in connection with the side wings 14 form a tight closure for the pouring opening in the receptacle Wall. The spout is of tin plate or other spring metal and the side Wings of the spout are normally divergent from each other, and are forced together in the closing movement of the spout when the portions of the side wings directly opposite the Wider end of the s out are forced through the narrow end o the spoutopening in the receptacle wall as the spout is closed. The frictional engagement of the resilient side wings of the spout with the side edges of the spout opening are suilicient to hold the spout securely closed and also to prevent any escape of the salt or other material that ma be in the can at the spout opening. A sticker 17 of paper or other like material, large enough to Wholly or partially cover the spout as may be preferred, may be pasted over the receptacle wall of the spout, if desired.
I claim:-
1. A receptacle having a pouring opening in one wall thereof, and provided with a hinge flap at one end of Said opening, and a sheet metal spout having side wings and a top wall adapted to fit and close the pouring opening said opening and top Wall being of substantially the same shape and size, said spout having at one end of its top wall a tang for securing it to the hinge flap, said side wings of the spout being resilient and diverging from the top Wall to the free ends, whereby as the spout is opened the wings are brought nearer together by the walls of the spout opening, and the spout is frictionally held in its opened position.
2. A receptacle having a tapered pouring opening in one wall thereof and provided with an integral hinge flap at the widest end of said opening, and a sheet metal spout having side Wings and a tapered top wall adapted to fit and close the pouring opening said opening and top wall being of substantially the same shape and size, said spout having at the Widest end of its top Wall an inte al tongue or tang secured to the hinge ap, said side wings being resilient and divergent from the top Wall to their free ends and being connected only by the top wall, whereby as the spout is opened the wings are brought nearer together by the Walls of the spout opening and the spout is frietionally held in its opened position.
3. A receptacle having a pouring opening in one Wall thereof, a sheet metal spout having side wings adapted to fit said opening, and a top wall ada said s out being hinged to the Wall at one end o said opening, the said side wings being resilient and diverging from each other, whereby yas the spout is opened the Wings are brought nearer together by the Walls of the pted to close the opening,
spout opening and the spout is frictionally held in 1ts opened position.
4. A paper receptacle having a sheet metal pouring spout hinged to one Wall thereof, said spout having resilient side wings diverging from each other, whereby as the spout 1s swung outwardly, the Wings are brought nearer together by engagement with said Wall of the paper receptacle and the spout is frictionally held in its opened position, substantially as specified.
