color... wheatland or ochre

can any one tell me why the factory brouchure advertizes wheatland yellow as a color and not the ochre as i have seen on the spids? was this a discontinued color? my investigation has a code 519 for wheatland and 511 for ochre. again...factory has no ochre? strange.

Re: color... wheatland or ochre

Not sure exactly what your concern is but the paint colors have a number of different names over the years. There are trade names and sales names often changing at a whim in ad copy.

The 519 "School Bus Yellow" has been around forever and is commonly known as trade names "Yellow Orange" and "Deep Yellow". In 72 for example its Chevrolet sales name was "Wheatland Yellow".

The 511 color your truck is "Ochre" as its trade name. In 72 its Chevrolet sales name was "Spanish Gold".

As with ANY RPO Code option the description while helpful is not the true definer of an option. Always use the code number. Paint codes in general tell us a lot on what color(s) and how a truck was painted from the factory.
These two colors, generally, will be listed in the SPID descriptions as DARK YELLOW and OCHRE their trade names. SPIDs used trade names to avoid the confusion and ambiguity of sales names.

yep, you're a true 511 ochre kinda guy Dave. I always thought that ochre and wheatland yellow were synonymous, personally. One the brochure name and one the SPID name, but it appears I have had the wrong info on wheatland. Yours is definitely 511 ochre though.

Re: color... wheatland or ochre

Sorry guys still a little tired, been a long or is it a short night? Anyway.... the dog is now home again and crashed on my bed.

Here is a notated sales brochure that will help some with similar questions. However these are solid codes and any two-tone will have a different number.

Re: color... wheatland or ochre

Wheatland was also called Dark Yellow. While it was offered s a standard selection in '72,it's a mainstay on the fleet paint program. The same as Tangiers Orange is actually Omaha Orange in the fleet program

Re: color... wheatland or ochre

Dave, As much as I like Dark (schoolbus, wheatland) Yellow, your truck if restored should go back to it's original Ochre color. It is not that I like Ochre but the fact that you have a very complete original truck that jocko has spent countless emails fretting over. Seen a lot of pictures and it is a very nice truck and worth going the extra mile to return to "as built". You don't see many solid Cheyenne Supers much less SWB and BB too.

i know the best thing to do is stay with ochre. it would be better for overall value. im having a hard time with this! you are right! im not sure yet which way i will go. i have time before i restore it. so... i will give it alot of thought. but again... your right! thx, dave

Here is a polished up Ochre (Joe's Junk) to give a good idea what they looked like new. The chrome upper and lower trim helps to brighten the color.

uh-hem OCHRE rules! but it is your truck to do with as you please. If it were mine I would make it ochre and white with white roof and white in between the moldings.
