First shown as a prototype on a modified Europa chassis at the 1972 Turin show, the Esprit was launched at the 1975 Paris Motor Show. It went into full production in June 1976, replacing the Europa. Lotus focused on the engineering, but the styling was given to Giorgio Giugiaro and his then new Italdesign studio. Giugiaro suggested the name Esprit, which remained on the production car. Power by an all new 160 horsepower all alloy Lotus, 2.0 litre, twin-cam, four-cylinder, mid-mounted engine. This propelled the car from 0-60mph in just 6.8 secs and onto a top speed of 138MPH.

The S1 Esprit is easily distinguished from the second series car by its shovel style front air dam, lack of rear quarter ducting, and Wolfrace alloy wheels. Inside, the unique green faced Veglia gauges also set it apart from its young brother.

The Series 1 Esprit became instantly recognisable after its appearance in the 1977 James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me.

The Lotus Esprit Series 1 offered here at Autostorico is finished in Monaco White with Patterned Green interior trim. Supplied new via Lothian Sports Cars and registered to its first owner on 21^st October 1976. Purchased by its current owner a Lotus enthusiast in 2013 via Scott Walker of Lotus cars. This very original vehicle was then subject to a no expense spared restoration carried out by marque specialist Matthew Oxley. Works included removing the engine, gearbox and stripping the whole body, before being resprayed.

 The car was also subject to a full mechanical overhaul including engine, gearbox, and suspension rebuild. Other notable works included overhauling the braking system, re-wire and interior re-trim.

Supplied with an extensive history file including current V5 registration document, Lotus heritage certificate, numerous invoices and other related documentary history.
