For almost a decade, Spada developed designs for Zagato, including the Lancia Flavia and Lancia Fulvia, as well as the Lamborghini 3500 GTZ. The Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato would be the last Spada-designed Zagato to see production before he left the firm.

The Alfa Romeo Junior Z was a limited production (between 1969 and 1975) two-seater coupé with bodywork by Zagato of Milan. The car was based on the floorpan, driveline and suspension of the Alfa Romeo Spider 1300 Junior. However the floorpan was shortened behind the rear wheels to fit the short rear overhang of the Zagato bodywork. The production process was rather elaborate, with the basic structure built at Alfa’s Arese factory before being shipped to Zagato in Terrazano di Rho to weld in a new trunk floor. Then the bodies were shipped to La Maggiore in Turin for further assembly than back to Zagato for finishing.

Zagato

The Junior Zagato was Alfa’s attempt to produce a more exclusive vehicle off modest mechanicals. It was a striking shape, with Perspex covered headlamps that surrounded the traditional Alfa grille and a fastback profile with a kammback design incorporated.

In total 1.108 examples were built from the first 1300 series. In total 402 examples of the 1600 were made. The Zagato was about 20% more expensive than the Giulia Sprint 1300 whereby the number of sales was limited.

Zagato

This is one of the best Alfa rallycars we’ve ever seen. The base is a 1300 Junior Zagato from 1970 which was imported into the Netherlands in 1992 and has been restored and rally prepared in 2000 by Usato. The body has been fitted with a roll cage for rally use and the engine is a 2.0 Liter (AR06123) with two-barrel DellOrto DHLA 40E carburettors for more performance. It comes with all the necessary rally equipment. This car drives fantastic can win any rally. Another advantage is that Zagato’s are going up in value so one can enjoy vintage rallying and still have a solid investment.
