Next a 1949 Convertible...

1949 Town & Country convertible. A wonderful car solid car that has been garaged and well taken care for. The person I bought it from was a Dr. who owned it for 30 years. Recently the wood was completely refinished and a few minor things fixed. These pictures are before the wood refinish, if interested, I can send pictures of refinished work. All parts are original, interior is pristine, the outside is in very good condition. There are a few stone chips on the front area (where painted) and hood, the rest of the car's paint is solid and shines well. Engine and transmission run perfectly. Every year it is one of three woodies chosen to be in front of the Coeur d Alene resort for the Coeur d Alene boat show. I am asking a very reasonable price of 75,000. You won't find a better one for this price! For inquires send email to akpierce10@hotmail.com or call Keith at 208-651-3692

1941 Chrysler Town and Country -$320,000

First appearing in 1941, the Town & Country represented a significant leap forward in wood-bodied car styling.  This 1941 Town & Country Barrel Back is a striking example of one of the most sought-after classic American woodies. One of only 996 of its kind produced it is a very desirable and significant piece of automotive history. The car offered was previously in the possession of the renowned woody expert the late Dr. L. Wesley “Wes” Aplanalp best known as the owner of Woodies USA of Scottsdale Arizona. Wes was more than just a dealer in wood-bodied cars; he was a passionate collector and a hub for collectors to share in his vast knowledge and he dealt in the finest quality cars of the type. This particular car is believed to have been sold by Wes in the last 15 years. It has been comprehensively refurbished and restored and presents in stunningly beautiful condition today. It is highly original and as such the body appears never to have been off the chassis. Remarkably the extensive wood work is highly original. The wood in these cars is not just decorative it is integral to the structure of the body and as such it can be subjected to stresses. Few have survived the elements and the rigors of regular use as exquisitely as this car has. Only the contrasting panels in the doors and body sides appear to have been replaced. The paint is attractive the chrome has been restored to a high standard and it wears factory fog lamps and a fantastic wooden roof rack a desirable and attractive option.Inside this car is in 9-seat specification showing extremely nicely in partially restored condition with fine maroon leather upholstery. The dash is an exquisite display of high-deco design with geometric chrome details amidst a striking marbled Bakelite dash panel and steering wheel. It’s quite unlike anything else of the period. Switches and instruments appear to be totally original further evidence of this car’s outstanding originality. It is well-equipped with an original clock heater and radio. In the engine bay resides a nicely detailed “Spitfire” inline six mated to a fluid-drive “Vacumatic” transmission.

Wonderfully Preserved 1941 Chrysler "Barrel Back" / CCCA Full Classic

Having handled, owned and traded an untold numbers of high end CCCA Classics over the years it becomes difficult to really be impressed, but this car literally takes my breath away. This is a 66,000 mile, wonderfully preserved and never restored example of without a doubt the "wooden car" era's most extravagant model. The "Town and Country Barrel Back", is a sensation where ever she goes. Rumored to have belonged to the Rockefeller family, it befits the name. It does still wear its 1951 Vermont inspection sticker. Later in life (around 1970), the car became the property of the Gould family (Massachusetts) who created an automobile museum in Meredith, New Hampshire and later moved their car museum efforts to Route 1 in Wells, Maine. This car was their flagship exhibit, from its first day through its closing in recent years. Even the original leather is still beautiful. The wood is extremely handsome. The chrome has a mellow patina but presents itself very well. This is the rare nine passenger version. The dash plastic is exceptional. This automobile drives superbly, having recently benefited from a major service by a top restoration shop. The car has very adequate power and has proven to be both reliable and extremely well mannered on the road. Being a 1941 vintage, this is something that can be safely driven at night as sealed beam headlights were standard equipment. This would be a perfect candidate for use at a retreat or for summer lake or mountain house. Is is easy to operate and it would be a huge hit for taking your guests to and from the local airport, around town, or maybe just out to dinner. This "barrel back woody" is the essence of understated elegance!

Presently, the car is museum stored in Lynchburg, Virginia. If not sold, in a couple of weeks,  I do plan on bringing her to my central New Hampshire home to enjoy for the summer and fall. This is a diamond in the grand scheme of collector automobiles. It is also a full CCCA (Classic Car Club of America) Classic. They rarely trade. Only a small few still exist and only a handful remain in well preserved and "never restored" order. Do your homework on the values, but I feel this example is extremely fairly priced. I may consider a partial trade and I am always receptive to cash offers.

                                                                    THE ULTIMATE SURVIVOR

There is a saying in the classic car community, "You can restore a vehicle a hundred times but it is only original once!"

This rare 1947 Chrysler Town and Country convertible is as near to original as you can get.  The original paint is very nice but has some flaws.  The chrome and stainless are very presentable for their age.  The interior is maroon leather and cord with the leather slightly tattered but is captured in clear plastic covers to preserves it's originality.  The dash is immaculate with all lights, cigaret lighter and  gauges working.   The original engine has been completely rebuilt. The fluid drive transmission has been completely serviced and can be driven as a stick or an automatic. It still sports the original electric power top but the fabric needs repair.  This Chrysler is a dream to drive and cruises down the highway at freeway speeds.  The original wood is nearly flawless with original varnish showing that great patina that everyone looks for. The options include:  A working heater, spot light, wide white wall tires and clock.

Similar models in this condition are selling for 130+ thousand. This is a ride and drive ready car. Take it to the shows and parades or haul the family to church on Sundays. What we believe to be an original 80 thousand miles is just about unheard of for this vehicle. Been in climate storage since restoration driven once a month to rotate bearings and circulate fluids. I will deliver this vehicle anywhere in the U.S. After purchased. Call or text any time 214-679-8723- Jason

       1949 Chrysler Town and Country - $89,500

This example is a cosmetic restoration on an excellent rust free automobile completed 10 years ago. It was painted at that time and the top was recently replaced. New correct hog's hair carpet was also installed. The wood is ash with mahogany inserts. The chrome is in excellent condition, except for very minor pitting on the windshield frame. The black exterior and yellow leather interior are correct for 1949 as seen in the full page ad for the Town & Country in Holiday Magazine, November 1949.

Accessories include backup lights, side mirrors and fog lights. The radio and heater both work. All gauges are clear and the gauges and lights are in good working order. The engine bay needs some minor detailing, but this is a good, solid car with no rust ever that runs well. The 75,913 miles on the odometer are believed to be original. It has cruised about 6,000 miles since it was restored.  Vintage Motor Cars, 5040 Richmond Road Bedford Heights, OH 216-496-9492 http://www.VintageMotorCarsUSA.com
