Car Description

1970 Ford Thunderbird 4-dr Landau Sedan powered by a 7.0L 429cui-4v V8 Thunder Jet Ford ‘385-series’ big block engine matched to a C6 3-spd column-shift automatic transmission and driven through a Ford 9″ rear differential.

Strong Running 429 V8 ‘Thunder Jet’
               C6 3-spd Transmission
               Ford 9″ Diff
               Power Assisted Front Disc Brakes
               Power Steering

The 5th-Gen of the Ford Thunderbird was a large personal luxury car that was produced by Ford for the 1967 to 1971 model years. For the 1970 model year, the Thunderbird was stylistically updated with the addition of a large, bird’s beak-style projection out of its grille and also featured sequential turn signals incorporated into the full panel tail lights at the rear of the car. The car was offered in both 2 or 4-door models.

This Thunderbird was produced in the last week of August 1970 in Ford’s Los Angeles, Southern California plant as a Thunderbird Landau 4-dr (suicide-door) hardtop sedan and was fitted with a ‘N-Code’ 429cui V8 Thunder Jet big block engine, that was matched with a C6 3-spd ‘Cruise-O-Matic’ column-shift automatic transmission and paired to a Ford 9″ conventional rear differential. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in Ford’s Dark Blue paint with a Black vinyl top, trimmed with Dark Blue vinyl interior and fitted with a front split bench seat and featuring a folding armrest. This car was then delivered to the Seattle, Washington district sales office where it was sold and has spent all its life.

This car is very original and unmolested, and still wears its original body panels and has had one repaint in its original factory colour of Dark Blue. There are minor scratches and paint blemishes here and there, but overall it is in what we would call ‘good original driver quality’ condition. The underside of the car is very solid with the floor pans and frame rails in good shape. It has the typical, for this model, minor rust issues in the lower front & rear quarter body panels where the drain holes block up with dirt & mud, and there is evidence of moisture under the vinyl roof at the join below the passenger side rear window. The interior is in good original condition with only some minor imperfections. The car runs strong and drives well, with a deep throaty exhaust tone.

This is a great entry level classic car, and yes it has 4 doors, but the back 2 doors are “suicide doors”. Not too often that you see these on the road anymore, and as such the suicide doors tend to be a conversation piece.

So, there you have it, a very rarely seen 4-dr (suicide door) Thunderbird Landau with the venerable 429cui 360hp ‘Thunder Jet’ engine.
