The 1971 Charger marked the beginning of the third-generation, and received significant restyling inside and out. It was slightly smaller, sleeker, and had a more exaggerated coke-bottle shape. The split front bumper returned, but it wrapped around the entire grill. It was now offered as a coupe and two-door coupe. The Charger was now available as four distinct models.

The R/T housed the Magnum engine and added front bucket seats, blacked-out hood, heavy-duty brakes, and the R/T handling package.

The 500 was the intermediary between the base model and R/T and go you vinyl bucket seats and wheel lip moldings.

The Super Bee was formerly under the Coronet name, and added a Rallye suspension and floor shift transmission, but kept the front bench seat of the base models.

The SE focused more on performance rather than luxury and added split cloth and vinyl seats, electric clock, and other updated trim.
