62k Original Miles: 1971 AMC Javelin

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This rather attractive Wild Plum colored AMC Javelin is for sale here on eBay. This Javelin is reported to have a genuine 62,000 miles on the clock, and the seller has full documentation to verify this. Located in Sherman, Texas, it is offered with a clear title. Bidding on this Javelin opened at $5,000 but has now reached $13,200 with the reserve currently unmet. If you want to bypass the bidding process the seller has also set a BIN of $21,900.

The seller states that the body of this Javelin is solid, and he rates the paint as a nine out of ten. It certainly looks to be in good condition, and the T-top style white vinyl roof also looks to be in first class condition. All of the chrome and trim is present and it all looks to be spot-on, while the original Rally Wheels (with new tires) set off perfectly on this car.

The interior also presents exceptionally well. The only problem is a seam separation of about 3″ on the rear seat, some minor wrinkling of the headliner in the back on the passenger side and a cover on the steering wheel. There is also some wear on the driver’s door trim around the window winder, but this may be able to be fixed. The previous owner has fitted the Javelin with an aftermarket radio/cassette player, but thankfully the dash wasn’t cut for this and the seller still has the original radio which goes with the car. Otherwise, everything is good and as this Javelin left the factory.

Under the hood is the 360ci V8 which is backed by an automatic transmission. This original engine has been the recipient of a recent rebuild. Once again the seller holds documentation to verify all work completed. The air conditioning has been updated to R12 specifications. The car is fitted with a new Holley carburetor, and the seller is also including two used 1971 Carter carburetors along with a new Carter still in the box. The seller also has new shocks for the car, but these haven’t been installed as yet. Overall the seller states that the car drives well.

Overall this AMC Javelin appears to be in nice condition and is the sort of car that you could drive and enjoy now. It doesn’t seem to have any issues, and with the verified mileage that it has traveled, it represents a rather nice way of becoming a classic car owner.

I dated a girl who owned one of these in medium gold. If it had been this color maybe the relationship would have lasted longer. Beautiful car, but an A/C update would be to R-134a, wouldn’t it?

Yep, R-134a would be the updated refrigerant. R-12 is old school.

In fact, I think the EPA outlawed R12 altogether, didn’t they?

        Yes, in the early ’90’s

We do it old school here in Mexico. R12 is still available.

Go across the border and get it charged.

Sorry Shannon, I don-t live in that area.

I am sure you will see signs all around for A/C shops.

I am not sure you can transport that Freon back in to the US, however.

It’s been a long time since I saw one this nice! 1972 is a desirable year. Finally gone are the vacuum windshield wipers and ancient Borg-Warner automatic transmission, and primitive 1970s emission controls had not sapped engines too badly yet. Of course the 401 V8 would be the holy grail, but the 360 is no slouch and is amenable to performance mods. All I see that a little “off” is if you look carefully at the interior photo it appears that there’s a cheesy aftermarket cassette deck installed. Hopefully the dash wan’t hacked up too badly for that.

Arrgh, misread the year, for some reason thought it was a ’72! (Maybe from scrolling down and seeing the electric wiper motor. :)) So this one does have the Borg transmission (still OK, just not as good as the later Torqueflite), and it has the optional electric wipers. D’oh!

That’s OK Mr. AMC guy. Wish mine had electric wipers but being the base model they fit.

AMC needs resurrection. The eagle was 20 years to soon. The care taker of the jeep legacy. Bring back AMC. Bring back AMC.

Do you really want a FIAT-based AMC revival? That’s what it would be- think I am full of S? Look at the Jeep line-up, it’s predominately FIAT based. “Jeep- the most ‘American’ brand” is the funniest and yet most ironic joke. Hasn’t been domestic since Chrysler & Daimler tried screwing the shareholders with a takeover they called “The merger of equals.”

Isn’t the only fiat based Jeep the Renegade? As far as I know, everything else is designed and built in North America.

The Compass has the Fiat engine for this year, 2018, I was told by the salesman.

I stopped looking at it at that point.

Fiat is filtering into much of the Jeep line which will kill it.

You have to laugh at the inbreeding among car companies, and the progeny of their efforts. The new Fiat 124 is a Mazda MIATA!?!?!?!

The Renegade is the only Fiat (Panda) disguised as a Jeep. Both it and the Compass uses the 2.4L four, which was originally designed jointly by Chrysler and Hyundai, but I believe now uses an intake/head system designed by Fiat. It’s a world economy, so stuff like this doesn’t really bother me much.

Ultimate color combo IMO,what a beauty! I must sound like a braggart by now but I also have a 1971 Javelin. It’s cool but not near this nice.

Wow. This is an early childhood fantasy car for me! Sharp and what a great color/trim combo as others have said. And nicely optioned. Could be the poster car for “‘71 AMC Javelin”.

Nice lady I dated had one this color, but AMX package, 401, and four speed. Wonder if she’s watching this auction? Linda? Major mistake letting her get away – she never did respond to my proposal.

I personally would want a 4-speed manual, paint that’s not purple, and an interior that’s not white. The 360 is fine (I’ve owned several and don’t prefer the 401), and I prefer the SST trim to the flashier AMX spoilers.
For someone who likes the aesthetics on this car, though, it’s a nice one!

Bidding at $13.600.00. Price = $19,995.00. Seems a bit high, even with today’s high prices. But, these Jav’s and AMX’s are bringing the money. So, who knows? Basically, I love ’em. I just can not afford them. This one looks pretty sweet.
