Poor Man’s Muscle: 1970 Pontiac LeMans Sport

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Sometimes a good muscle car project will show up at a halfway decent price. It’s even better when that decently priced project isn’t smothered with weeds or becoming one with the earth again. Such is the case with this 1970 Pontiac LeMans Sport found here on Craigslist in Leavenworth, Kansas.

For 1970 the LeMans could be had with bigger engines previously reserved only for the GTO line. The seller of the LeMans doesn’t say whether or not the 400 V8 is original, but this car could very well have had a two or four barrel 400 from the factory. The two-barrel would have been a 265 horse engine while the four-barrel and dual exhaust option would have put that number to 330 horsepower.

Whether this one had a factory four-barrel or not it definitely has one now. If it runs halfway decent it shouldn’t be too much of a slouch with a set of headers, bigger cam, and dual exhaust. The seller does state that the interior could use some love and the lack of good pictures here would seem to indicate that it would need a fair amount of work.

This LeMans does have some rust that would need to be worked out but it doesn’t seem to be a bad project overall, especially given the $2,800 asking price. Some may see this as an opportunity to make a GTO clone, but this Pontiac would be great if made to look like an era correct pavement pounder with tasteful upgrades, all the while keeping the LeMans badges. A coat of Keylime Green Poly and a set of era correct wheels would really bring this car to life. So, is $2,800 starting point too much to ask? If not, what would you do with this project?

I hope someone restores it and not turn it into a GTO clone. Nowadays there are probably more GTO’s around than Le Mans Sports.

Looks like the long-forgotten GT-37 is still forgotten.
A HS girlfriend’s parents had one (blue w/grey reflective stripe), with a 4-speed as their “Winter beater” in the ’80’s.
Somebody in the ’90’s bought it…so if anybody here bought a GT-37 in the ’90’s out of Enon- I know that car

I am far, far too young to have remembered the GT37 new. But I saw a triple-green example (favorite color) at a show 3 years ago & when I talked about it the owners looked at me like I was a time traveler. I would have stolen it if it was an auto.

Poor Mans GTO or Cool Sleeper. Saw one of these win Best Restored GTO back in June 1987 at Fremont Raceway. It was a originally a Blue/White top 4spd/350HO(rare car). Repainted Red with 400/4spd., couldn’t stop laughing. All these years later they are still passing it off as original GTO Conv. I’m still laughing. Buyer beware!
I still like these cars, Mom had one when I was little. It was yellow 350/auto.

Are those two bullet holes in the trunk?
I like what they had done to this year’s ago, definite late night cruiser. I’d keep that vibe going, not pretty it up.

Why would somebody want to make this a GTO clone.

I would drive it as a LeMans and enjoy it.

NO! Leave it as a LeMans! They are even rarer than GTO’s. Maybe price isn’t as high but, it never was a GTO, never will be. Why do people attempt to fool the general public? It only tells me these people are deceivers. And I don’t want to deal with them. Besides, the ad has already expired. Don’t know why, but, I’ve been getting a lot of expired ads from 5 days previous that are expired, deleted, removed, etc. Oh, well..

Just like with the Satellite’s/Road Runners. I would snag a few go-fast goodies from the GTO parts bin and leave the Lemans Looking mostly original. Not a clone, but better than stock.

I would put an enduro front bumper on it, only because they look nicer. Leave the badges, Fix what needed to be fixed and then raise some serious hell in that car. A GT-37 I think only has different badges and stickers. I have ridden in one this same color and year. It is a baseline Lemans with sport trim package, more Tempest than Lemans I think. GT-37’s are sort of reare though compared to a GTO or GTO Tribute, Or GTO clone, or wanna be or fake or POS.
