Regatta Blue Stunner: 1985 Ford Mustang GT

This 1985 Ford Mustang GT looks super sharp in beautiful Light Regatta Blue paint, with factory T-tops and the preferred combination of a 5.0L V8 and manual gearbox. This is one of the so-called “four-eyed” models owing to its recessed headlights as opposed to the flush-fitting units that would appear a short time later. The seller”s car appears to be in extremely nice condition with no rust, 69,000 original miles, and an SVO rear spoiler painted to match. Find it here on craigslist on Long Island for $22,900.

The GT looks factory fresh sitting on classic white-letter radials, and while the SVO spoiler isn’t a standard item a GT, I wouldn’t have noticed it if the seller hadn’t pointed it out. The listing makes no mention of modifications, so perhaps those are stock muflers jutting out beneath the bumpers; the perfect shine they still display made me question whether or not an aftermarket exhaust had been fitted. The listing claims the GT has always been garaged, and based on the cosmetic condition on display, I find little reason to doubt that claim.

The engine bay is beautiful, looking super clean just like the rest of the car. There are no apparent modifications and the the details look right, from the air cleaner with its OEM-correct decals to the labels and stickers still affixed to the radiator support. The paintwork also looks consistent from the fenders to the engine bay, so hopefully that means the car has never seen any real paintwork. The plastics all sport a nice, deep shine and the ingition wires look fresh – although the seller doesn’t mention any recent maintenance history.

The interior looks as you’d expect for a car that presents so well on the outside, with factory bucket seats showing little in the way of use and carpets and plastics all presenting as damage-free. Even with relatively low mileage, we see plenty of cars with 70K on the clock that aren’t nearly as clean as this one, so kudos to the seller and anyone before him that has helped to preserve this four-eyed Mustang. The asking price is all the money for one of these, and while I think it’s a tall ask that the seller will get every last penny, he may very well get pretty close to it.     Beautiful example with the rare cruise control and steering wheel that accompanies that option. The tailpipes are stock 2 1/4″ tailpipes. They were polished stainless so they do not rust so I am not sure why the author is questioning them. The plug wires are (obviously) not original. The originals were grey.

    This is a nice one if you’re looking for one. I can’t see it being worth much less than he is asking.

    Regatta Blue was for some reason very popular on regular Mustangs this year but not so much on the GT. It was the rarest GT color by far.

    Only 2,638 between the LX 5.0 HB and GT, and i bet most were LXs. I’ve seen very few ’85-86 GTs in this color in my life, and most of them have been two tone with the charcoal bottom. So pretty rare!

    Also that spoiler is incorrect. That’s from an SVO.

    Very nice four-eye. I think it looks good in this color. Given the rise in all Fox Body prices, the ask is probably not far off.

    Many lament the tall gears these foxes came with from factory. 2.73 or 3.08. I found they worked just fine that way.
    Light blue looks good on mustangs, particularly like the Windveil blue w tan interior on the mid 2000 model yrs.

    I owned an ’85 GT ‘vert with the 5-speed, optional axle, cruise, etc. White over Red with White leather. It was a spectacular looking car in it’s day and I miss it tremendously. The cam in the ’85 along with the Holley 4-barrel really rewarded revving the 302 up to redline. You could feel the engine come “on the cam” at about 4k RPM and it would just rush to the the redline. I replaced it with an ’88 GT manual with the injected 5.0. A smoother and torquier engine but didn’t reward the run to the redline like the ’85 did.

      I worked w a buddy, had same car as you, no leather. They were runners. Sounded great, the dual snorkel is cool. Fantastic seats. Great cars. 👍

    I own an 85 GT 4bbl 5 speed that I bought new. Mine is not a low mileage survivor as I drove it through 32 states, mostly while in the Navy then daily drove it for 17 years. While living in New Hampshire, I had no choice but to drive it in the winter but arranged to run it through a car wash every day. It is mostly stock and still looks reasonably nice. I still love to drive it.

    I read a lot of comments over the years from guys that regretted selling their cars. I took those to heart and was fortunate that I was able to keep my Mustang. It still engenders a lot of comments and discussion every time I get gas for it.

    I have an 85 GT 4BBL 5 speed that I bought new. I still recall the test drive and how quick the car was compared to my Camaro.

    For better or worse, my car has over 200k miles, been in 32 states, and was a daily driver for 17 years. It still looks reasonably good, runs great, and remains mostly stock. I still enjoy driving it.

    I just retired after 32 years with one company and drove the Mustang to work on both my first and last days.

    I recall reading comments like some in this thread over the years where guys say they regret selling a car. Those discussions played a part in decisions to keep it over the years and I was fortunate that I never needed to sell it. I am certainly glad that I never did.

    The ’85 and ’86 GT are for sure my favorite Fox body.

    More and more, I think that a drop top one of these is at the top of my “next fun car” list
